What to do when passport pages are full?
« on: January 29, 2011, 11:34:32 PM »
My American passport is nearly full with stamps. Do I need to get a new one or can I have additional pages put in it? I have read both so just seeing if anyone else has had to do this.

You can do either one.  I've had extra pages put into mine because it wasn't anywhere close to expiring.

I'd go with new pages.  But just a warning, if you do run out and your traveling  there's a good chance that you will be denied entry.  I've seen it happen.

How to get extra pages: http://london.usembassy.gov/cons_new/acs/passports/extra.html

How to renew your passport:
http://london.usembassy.gov/cons_new/acs/passports/renindex.html

Be aware that it's $82 for extra pages & $110 for a new passport so if you're anywhere near close to your expiration date then it's probably best to go with the renewal.

Also, keep in mind that you can request a 52 page passport with a renewal for no additional cost.  Just stick a note in the application asking for it.  Much better than spending $82 at a point in the future!

Thanks! My passport is 5 years away from expiring so I think I will opt with getting new pages. I didn't realize it cost that much money because what I had already read said they did it for free but this may have been old. I will check the website you posted, WebyJ and hope that I can find all information on where to send my passport to, etc. I would be devastated if I was denied entry somewhere because of that!

I had extra pages affixed. Don't be alarmed if immigration officials look at those taped in pages skeptically and hesitate where to stamp. Then when I renewed I was surprised that my passport was automatically upgraded to more pages.

It was free, up until this past summer, July I think. When all the passport fees went up, they added in the fee for pages.  I sent off my passport right before it went into effect for extra pages even though it was less than a year old and definitely not full since I thought there was a decent shot at needing more pages at some point.
