Winter - Go Away!
« on: January 31, 2011, 08:59:56 PM »
Oh man, I've held off as long as I could, but we're on the final day of January, and so my annual moaning begins...

Will it ever be over?!  I'm so tired of being cold.

I want warmer weather & flowers & sunshine... Now!  >:(

Anyone else fed up with winter already?
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in...

- from Anthem, by Leonard Cohen (b 1934)

I am already starting to dream of opening windows for fresh air in the flat and hanging clothes out to dry again and getting my garden going again.

Whole new world for a Southern gardener, but I'm very happy.

We have been getting snow every single freaking week!  Garbage hasn't been picked up in about two weeks because of it and there are rats in the city!  Two weeks or so ago we got about 8 inches, this was soon covered by another 12 and tonight we could get another 4 - 6.  Of course, this all follows the 20 inches we got the day after Christmas and a couple of smaller storms and several days that didn't hit 20 degrees farinheit!

I can't stand it another minute!  I'm moving to Indonesia!

No, no, no - winter can't go away yet!

I was just given a new shiny wool winter coat!  I need time to wear it!!!   ;D

Seriously, I wouldn't mind being able to open the windows and a get a fresh breeze through the flat.  The air is starting to seem a bit... stale.   :-\\\\

The high pressure system that we've had for the last week has broken down now, and we're getting back to the more normal westerly systems (fronts and depressions)... it's likely to be milder this week (highs of 9 or 10 degrees in Yorkshire for the next couple of days) and into the weekend, but it's going to be fairly unsettled (i.e. wet and windy).

And I was just saying to DH how spring-like it was today! It's still pretty cold at night, but the daytime today was sunny and just had that real spring feeling. And by the end of the week it's supposed to be into the 50s!  :D

Yay! I realised today that I've started keeping my eyes out for daffodils. Come on Spring!

It was up to 8 degrees C today - that's like summertime up here in the north pole!  :P

I'm doing OK, as it's getting brighter in the mornings and staying lighter at night.

Mrs R, I'm afraid you're just gonna have to convince your hubby that you have to move to Spain.

Right there with ya!  I don't like the hot summers here, but I'm even looking forward to it at this point.

We'll the east coast is having a helluva La Nina winter. According to some forecasters, we're looking at potential storms every week through February. It's a meteorologist's dream. Not so much the rest of us. As I write this, Maryland is bracing for an ice storm. Fingers crossed people stay off the roads and that we also dont' have major power outages.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Oh yeah, all my New England friends are just groaning at the thought of more snow- there's nowhere to put any of it!
My older sister is a teacher and is enjoying all the extra time off - but she won't be happy at all come the summer.
My younger sister groans because her 8 year old is seemingly never in school and he really needs the structure that school offers him.

I'm not convinced we'll get away without more winter/ice/snow peeking its head around here again either before spring  :-\\\\

Yay! I realised today that I've started keeping my eyes out for daffodils. Come on Spring!
My daffs raised a few green shoots up a week or so ago. Still too soon to hope for buds (as it's too cold for any buds to survive if they did!). I'm really looking forward to it warming up so I can start my garden going again...

I hear you, Sscarllet! I think Boston's going to be getting a bit more than 4-6 today and tomorrow though. I now understand why Scandinavians are prone to suicide!

Not to be a downer, but the last I heard on the news this morning is that we were going to get 7-10 inches today with the rest arriving tomorrow for a total of 10 to 15 inches.  I'm so over this snow.
