TV Licence for 2 months?
« on: February 04, 2011, 03:56:55 PM »
Hi! After almost 3 years in the UK, we are moving back to New York in less than 2 months.  We are wondering about the TV licensing.  Our license just ran out, but as we are moving so soon, do we have to get it renewed for a few lousy weeks?

I keep getting the letters in the mail to renew, but it is for one year only and we really don't want to pay if we are about to leave the country.  What are the odds of getting in trouble for this?  Thanks!

I think they might have a monthly direct debit option, so you could pay for the two months and then cancel when you move, maybe?

You buy a licence for 1 year but you can get a refund of unused quarters (three months) provided you can show evidence (plane tickets, end of lease correspondence etc)

I think the direct debit option or paying quarterly at the post office if that is still an option is your best bet.  I applied for a refund of close to 6 months and never saw a penny.  I didn't aggresively chase after it, but still provided all the details they asked for and followed up once.

If you kept copies, send them with a complaint letter headed "This is a complaint". Did you fill out a refund application?

Can you get a refund sent to the Untied States?  I mean, I would assume they would only send it to a UK address.

I don't really want to be fined for over £1000.  And they actually called me yesterday on the phone!!!

I think maybe the best bet is to sell the TV early.  Which would suck.

I was going to suggest just not watching TV for those two months, and then you wouldn't need the license.

I applied for a refund when I was living in the UK, but it was direct deposited to my UK bank account.

They won't stop them from calling constantly, or possibly showing up at the house.  My friends have been going through this for years.

I got them to stop by writing to them and informing them I had no TV.

My friends have tried.  Every year they write and the next year they get more harassing letters.

Can't they just ignore it and not worry about it.

I lived in a new build flat a few years ago.  They originally had the flats listed under one postal code and that was changed within a few weeks of people moving in.  I had my tv license under the new postal code but still received all kinds of letters and such based on the old postal code.  I just ignored it.  If they couldn't be bothered to correct their mistake, I certainly wasn't bothered with ignoring their letters and such.

We once had the licensing people come by our house.  I invited the lady in so she could see we didn't have a TV.  We have gotten maybe one or two letters in the time we've lived where we are (3 years).

Doesn't it actually apply to watching programs online as well though (like iplayer or whatever)

Only if you're watching them live. I'm sure they'll change that at some point, but for right now, if you watch programmes after they have aired, you don't need one.
