Has anyone done Chip-Vaccine- blood draw in 1 day??
« on: February 22, 2011, 02:10:05 AM »
Hi Everyone-

We did the PETS scheme about 5 years ago then moved back to the US and now are going back to the UK.  Everything was current but the last vaccine was done in the UK under a new chip number (at the time they couldn't read the US one so put in a UK one).  The dog was going to need a new vaccine at the end of this year so we decided to do everything from the start except all on the same day.  So the vet was able to read both chips when we arrived at the office, then they did the vaccine and finally took the blood and sent it away.

My question is how did you (or your vet) document the process?  Did they just write a very detailed letter making sure to state the order was done correctly?  Did you have any trouble at animal reception?  I was thinking of faxing the information to Defra and making sure it's ok.  Any suggestions??

I didnt do this, but my suggestion would be exactly as you said - have the vet write a letter stating clearly that the microchip was inserted and scanned before the vaccine was given.  If your vet can document the date of the microchip implantation that would be even better.

DEFRA is very helpful, so running it by them as you mentioned will hopefully put your mind at ease.

I've heard that they "suggest" the blood draw be done 3 weeks after the vaccine so that the antibodies get a chance to work... But not sure if that time delay is required.  :-\\\\

My dog received his vaccine and microchip 3 weeks ago and got his blood drawn yesterday at the request of his vet.
There are two kinds of people.  People who say what they want, and people who DO what they want. Which one will you be?

It is required if your pet hasn't been vaccinated before, or if there's been a long lapse in vaccination. (If there are no antibodies, the bloodwork test will fail and you'll have to start over.)

If your pets are just getting a new vaccination to start the process, and have been current on the vaccine, it may not be required. I waited 12 days (I wasn't in a huge hurry), and my pets' results were well over the minimum. They'd had a 3-year vaccine done 6 months before I chipped/re-vaccinated.

Aw man, wish I would have known that. He was current on his rabies but the vet said it was suggested he wait 3 weeks from the vaccine.

Yeah, mine did too, but I opted to risk it with just 2 weeks instead. (Could've done same-day, but I didn't want to have to pay to re-vaccinate again if they did happen to fail.)

Thanks everyone.  Mine didn't need a new vaccine till Nov but with the complications of the new microchip number I thought to just to the new vaccine now and "start" over.  She passed with flying colors- I wasn't really worried about that.  I am just worried that when her paperwork gets checked over at ARC they might not like that is was all done in one day.

As long as they know the chip was done before the vaccine (even if only by 5 minutes), it's fine. If you want to be safe, see if your vet will give you the rabies certificate with the microchip # on it. You can also include a letter from your vet stating that they did the chip at X time on Y day and the vaccine at Z time on Y day.

Thanks-

Already got the chip number on the cert (both numbers actually) and was planning on the detailed letter from the vet.  I guess I'm just a bit paranoid even though we've done this twice before.  Just didn't know if any one had done it and had any suggestions.

There's nothing else you can do. Barring paying the USDA vet to hang out with you at your vet's office to observe the procedure, which I'm guessing they wouldn't be so keen on. :P
