Travelling alone with child...Permission letter needed?
« on: February 23, 2011, 11:42:27 PM »
My son and I will be travelling back to the U.S. next week for our first trip back since our move last summer.

We're both Tier 2 dependents. DH is the main visa holder, but he won't be travelling back with us.

I've run across other posts online that suggest taking along a notarized letter from the other (non-travelling) parent, but that's usually in reference to a single parent travelling between the US and Canada or Mexico. Will this be necessary for travel to/from the U.K.? And would the fact that I have a different last name from my son make it any more complicated?

I'd be interested to know this as well!  I'm taking my daughter to France in April without DH. My last name is different (my passport is still in my maiden name) and we have different passports.  I'll be travelling on an American passport, my daughter on an Irish one.

Over the past 5 years I have taken my kids alone to the US to visit my family, and I have never needed a letter, this summer I took both kids on my own and stayed for about a month. I say no, but if you feel more comfortable with a letter, get one. I was never asked for any sort of proof or a letter any times I have travelled alone with them.  I also have a different last name than my children do.

These are just my experiences.

I always feel like it doesn't take much effort to have a letter--I don't bother having it notarised. I have never needed it but it gives me peace of mind.

I'd take your daughters Birth Certificate with you just in case so you can prove your her parent, because you have different last names there is no obvious connection to the child.

I'd just have a simple letter written by your husband & take a photo copy of his visa. In addition take your sons birth certificate too to show you're his parent. US Immigration can be VERY strict, if they think you're trying to abduct your child away from their other parent they can refuse to let you return to the UK. So it would probably be best to have something from DH saying that there's no problems with you travelling alone with your son.

Thanks! Seems like it's best to be safer than sorry, so I'll bring one along.
