Has anyone given birth in London recently?
« on: February 27, 2011, 09:24:00 PM »
Well...it's early days, but I just found out I'm pregnant.  And being the research geek that I am, I'd love to hear from anyone who gave birth in London and what you thought about the hospital.  I'm very nervous about the whole process...then again, I still have to get to my 12 weeks at age 42, so it might be a moot point.

Holy heck, Liane!!! Whoo hoo! Sending you lots of good vibes. Can't help you with the London bit, but try to relax (I know, I know) and just focus on you for a bit! I'm sure someone here will be able to offer some insight though. ;D
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Thanks!  I know...we're in a bit of shock.  Totally unexpected to be honest, but very thrilled - the families are very happy.  I'll figure it all out.  Unfortunately I have a huge cold right now and can't take meds...that seriously sucks!

I always seemed to get my sickest when I was pregnant. If it gets really bad, do see the GP. You *can* take meds, you just need to avoid it if at all possible. I ended up on antibiotics a couple times. :P

Congrats Liane!!

Does almost two years ago count as recently?? :)  If so, I gave birth at Barnet General and was perfectly happy with the labor and delivery part of the process.  The aftercare on the ward was annoying for a few little reasons, but I was only there for 24 hours, so no biggie really.

My NCT group was quite varied in where we gave birth.  One in St Marys, one in the hospital in Archway/Highgate area whose name is escaping me and the Edgware birth center if a more natural birth is your speed.  All were happy with their experiences.  Oh and if you are thinking of going private...one girl went to the Portland.  I actually visited her and her baby there, it was way nicer than Barnet, but I guess that's why you pay extra!  She did end up with a C-section, so the "too posh to push" label may be fairly accurate.

I know the one most people really wanted to avoid in our North London based group was Chase Farm.  But there was talk over a year ago of their labor and delivery ward being closed, so may not even be an option.  It's just an older hospital than Barnet, so most of the girls just wasn't their first choice.

Good luck!  I hope everything goes well during the pregnancy.

No personal advice to give you as I'm not in the London area but I know if you look on the netmums site (in the coffee house forums) there is a whole section of threads about hospitals and birth centres where mums leave feedback about their experiences and opinions of various ones.
