looking at lists of things to buy: help with UK terminology?!

I've managed to figure out most of the terminology on all the lists I'm seeing of things I need for the baby...but can anyone tell me what 'baggies' are?!  and what about 'muslin squares'?!

baggies...hmmm might be those loose booties type footwear for newborns with elastic? Yep, searching mothercare website for baggies brings up exactly that.

muslin squares  - I've seen them referred to as burp cloths.  They are super handy to have, we've just picked up a few more for baby number 2 to top up the ones we bought for Jean.  I still use them at the dinner table for Jean to wipe her face and hands.

ohhh, that totally makes sense now--thank you!  i was too embarrassed to ask in my NCT class since everyone else seemed so familiar with what they were.

Muslin squares rock. My oldest was a 'muzzie monster' and loved them from the get-go. He's almost 5 now and they are still his version of a blankie or lovie. He has to have them somewhere near him/his bed at night and also when he's sick.

They are great for use as burp-cloths, general mopping up, napkins, even cloth diapers. I bought white ones and tie-dyed them. Even when my son finally outgrows them, I'll still use them for dusting, etc.

They really are fab.  The ones we just bought were from IKEA and have animals on.  You can use them in so many ways (have to say I never used them as cloth nappies though!) from wiping faces and hands to keeping your shoulders spitup free to draping as a coverup when breastfeeding in public.  Definitely a must have.

Definitely sold on the muslin squares--I think we're going to pick some up today!

Just a historical note here - my sister was born in 1959 and as I was eight years old at the time, changing her nappy was one of my frequent jobs!  In those days, muslin squares were the standard nappy liner, with a terry-cloth nappy on the outside.  So I think that is why they came to be used as general baby clean-up cloths, because people had a supply of them on hand.
