I'm trying to file my taxes online and I included that I have a daughter (she's 9 months old so wasn't on last years taxes). It keeps asking me for her social security number, but she doesn't have one since I haven't registered her birth yet. Also, before anyone says it, I don't want to go all the way to London to register her birth, we live near scotland so it would be too far to go right now just for that.
Should I just take her off my taxes and say I don't have any kids?

EDIT: I should also add registering her birth isn't even possible to do right now because my passport is sent in with my visa application. But if there's some other way to register her birth without my passport (using my birth certificate etc..) I would love to know about it!

It's not lying. Listing her as a dependent on the 1040 is only if you are claiming an exemption for her. You can't do this if she doesn't have a SSN. You could just do your return without her, then get her the SSN and file an amended return later. You may get a bigger refund or a lower tax liability for claiming her, so it's worth doing the amended return later. Also, as you are abroad, you have until June to file.

Oh ok thank you! I didn't know I had until June, that's useful.
I haven't made any money anyway so I don't think it will even make a difference if she's on it or not, I just didn't want to get in any trouble for not putting her on.

Just an FYI - If you're that close to Scotland, you may be able to register your child at the US Embassy in Edinburgh...you could always telephone them or send an email and ask.

+1 - and just to add, you have 3 years to amend a tax return. That should be plenty of time to get your daughter's SSN and file the amendment!

Our DD was registered in Edinburgh & it was a quick and painless process.

Thanks for the replies!
We did consider going to Edinburgh but we'd be taking the train and it takes the same amount of time to get there as it would to get to london, even though it's about 100 miles further to get to London  :-\\\\
