Mail Forwarding
« on: March 14, 2011, 04:13:26 PM »
Quick question... what did you do for mail forwarding? I am on USPS looking to change my addy but there is no way to forward out of the country. I don't have anyone in the states to have things sent to on a temp basis so I am not sure what to do?

I had my mail forwarded to the UK.  There are exclusions as to what they will forward (magazines, I think they won't send) but my regular mail ended up making it to me. It's slow delivery though.  ;)

I had a problem filling out the form too.  I ended up going down to the local post office so they could help me.  Sorry - it's been too long for me to remember how they told me to fill it out but I know I did use the regular form.

You can fill out the form in the post office, or you can use the form online. It doesn't allow you to put in a foreign address, but there is a quick workaround for that. Fill out the online form like the change of address is to a US address. When you submit it they give an option to print it, select that option. The form will then show up, copy and paste it into word and change the address you want the mail forwarded to the UK address. You can then print it out and post it.

I've done it that way recently and my post has been forwarded to me with no problems, I should have done it earlier! :D

Thanks! I did the print option, changed the address and sent it off. I sure hope that works, lol. I'll come back to this thread and let you know if I get my US mail - this could save people a lot of money in the future.

I tried that last year and got a notice that USPS doesn't forward internationally. So I'm stuck forwarding to my parents' address in MD instead.

Really? I'm getting my mail forwarded right now from San Diego to Norwich. Maybe it's a state by state thing?  ???

Maybe I'll try again. It'd be nice to get mail sent directly to me rather than having to go through my parents.

Just be aware that mail forwarding is meant to be temporary, either 6 months or a year (don't remember which). It's not a permanent solution.

I was also able to forward my mail to my UK address by filling out that change of address form and dropped it off at the post office. Somehow I made my foreign address fit and they accepted it.

Another work around (if you are already abroad) is getting a friend in the US to fill out the form for you and drop it in the mailbox (oh how I miss prepaid posts!). I'm moving again and I'm going to ask a friend to do this for me - saves time and money. Will let ya'll know if it works.

BTW, did you know that you have to pay Royal Mail to forward your mail for you? Wow, privatization eh.

I have my mail going to my parents place as well, I don't get anything thought other than bills from student loans (which I have to go through my family to pay anyways!) So I haven't bothered...But has it been worth it for you guys? I might look at doing it here in the future when we decide to move out of the apartment to a house!

I pay my student loans via my US bank account but I have changed my address with them to my foreign one - although I don't get my statements mailed anymore and just do everything online.
