Traveling with a guinea pig
« on: March 31, 2011, 07:10:11 PM »
Has anyone transported a guinea pig from the US to the UK?  Specifically Scotland?  I will be moving in the summer and I really want to bring mine with me, but haven't been able to find out exactly what the process would involve.  Any help here would be great!!

Looks like the guidance from DEFRA (http://archive.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-pets/pets/travel/documents/rabbits-rodents-guidance.pdf) says that all rodents/rabbits are subject to 6-month quarantine in the UK (no way to do it in the US beforehand). Looks like you need a license beforehand (to check your animal into quarantine), but that's it, other than finding an airline that's willing to handle the pet.

Good luck!

I've had good luck calling DEFRA before, so you/your fiance might try that. Their number's on their website, I think.

I know I'm a few months late, but I just wanted to let you know that you can get your guinea pig to the UK without quarantine if you go through another EU country. This is what I did with my rabbit, the UK doesn't have any regulations for taking rodents or rabbits in so long as you're going through another EU country. Amsterdam and France do not have quarantine regulations for rodents, you just need a health certificate so if you go in through Amsterdam and then fly to the UK, you'll avoid the quarantine regulation. Really weird that they do it that way, but there ya go!
