Shipping from Philadelphia to West Yorkshire
« on: April 14, 2011, 06:35:33 PM »
Hi Everyone,

Can anyone who has made a similar move (Philly area to West Yorkshire area) shed any light on the best way to ship my things?

I will have about 5 suitcases and approximately 10 boxes (18"x24" each).  A lot of the boxes will weigh about 50lbs.  I've checked USPS and UPS and.......WOW. I had no idea. They each want around $450 for one 50lb. box.

Any other ideas?
Also, is there anything you didn't know/found out later regarding shipping, e.g. taxes on the other end, insurance, etc.?
Any info would be much appreciated! :)

You could try a luggage shipping company--we used one to get about 5 bags over ahead of us. You could have bags that weighed up to 70lbs, and you get charged by the bag--so it actually works out way cheaper than posting them or bringing them on as excess baggage on the plane. It was door to door--they went through Fedex, I believe.
