Does anyone know anything about voting in the US while in the UK in a spouse visa? Can I do an absentee ballad? (across the pond-I did while I was in college and out of my hometown) how does it work in this case though?
I will be heading to Scotland in June after the visa goes through, Matt and I married this month in the states. I wanted to see about voting in  the 2012 presidential election. If anyone could help that would be awesome.
Thanks,
Stacy

I'm not on a spousal visa, but I applied for an absentee ballot for the 2010 elections. They had no problem sending my ballot overseas, and it was quite straight-forward to fill out. I plan to do the same for 2012.

There's a lot of good information about voting in US elections from overseas here:

Do the requirements/procedures vary from state to state or something?  I got an absentee ballot from the town clerk where I'm registered to vote (my dad's house) for the recent WI state election, and I had to have a U.S. citizen witness & sign the ballot envelope.  Since I don't know any other U.S. citizens here, I wasn't able to vote.  Was that just for the state election, or is it like that on all absentee ballots?  I want to make sure I'm able to vote in the 2012 election.

My NC ballot didn't mention any need for a US citizen to witness, just a witness in general. I'll be voting in MD next time, though, so it might be different.

Yes.

Look at that link above for the Overseas Voter Foundation.  It's got information on what you need to do to register to vote in whatever state you're originally from.

I'm a WI voter, and yes, you need that signature by a US citizen, unless they change the rules.

Also, if youre a Democrat you can register with Democrats Abroad and vote in their Primary instead of voting in a State primary as they get a spot at the Convention. (I was able to vote online last time) Unfortunately theres no Repblicans Abroad representation (or at least there wasnt in the 2008 election)

Note that if for any reason you end up back in the states, and wish to vote, you may need to notify your local elections board that you are actually back.  A few years ago after returning from Munich I was told at the polling place that I would be unable to vote in a local election because I was still technically registered as 'abroad', which was valid for 2 years post-request.
