What do I do? Which doctor? Possible TMI
« on: April 24, 2011, 10:04:38 PM »
1) I will be in the UK in 2 weeks on a spousal visa. I can go to the doctor's right away, correct? Or must I register before going?

2) The problem: I have 2 bumps under my skin that can move around. They hurt if pressed on. Do I go to a dermatologist or a gyno (they're covered by my underwear...)? I promise you it's not an STD!

I feel a little gross typing that but this is seriously freaking me out so please be nice.  :-[

We met in Tokyo through friends when we both lived in Japan.

Last year we moved to Thailand, got our first apartment together, got jobs with the same employer (!), didn't end up killing each other, got married, and decided to move to the UK to settle down.

London, here we come!

You need to register, but that's a matter of saying, "I'd like you to be my doctor" and them saying "yes"*.  You would see a GP and they'd refer you to a dermatologist, not sure about making a gynocological appointment.  If you're really worried you can go to a family planning clinic - they see anyone and everyone for free and you can just drop by.

* they don't always say "yes"

Ah, good to know. I went googling for what they might be and it seems loads of bike riders get the same problems! Glad to know I'm not alone here.  :P

Do you always see a doctor before seeing a dermatologist or can you just go to a dermatologist? What I mean is, is the doctor always first for a referral?

Yes, you must go to the GP first unless you want to go private.  Even then, some places want a GP referral.

Depending on what the problem is, your GP may be able to help you without sending you to a dermatologist.

It it's something that loads of bike riders get, there's a good chance that your GP is familiar with it.

If you do get referred to a dermatologist, the wait will be based on the urgency of the problem.

Yeap, just to echo the sentiments here- register with a GP (hopefully without issue- you shouldn't have issue, but there are a few threads on here on how to register if you do have issues) -

Get an appointment with the GP - and they'll take it from there on what they deem medically necessary.

Here's a few pages on GPs in England

And a few pages on choices in treatment and choice of places for treatment in England

Hopefully its nothing serious  :)
