The best holiday you've taken since you came to the UK

A place to share those recommendations -- where did you go, where did you stay, and what made it so good? Feel free to tell us about places within the UK as well as places further afield.

I'm a bit biased of course, but almost anywhere in Scotland is made of wonderful! We were recently in the Inverness area for the umpteenth time, and though Inverness itself is nothing to shout about (sorry noriem and phatbeetle  ;) ), the surrounding area is gorgeous and very accessible. The Black Isle is beautiful and there is an organic brewery and a place to look for dolphins and seals; Carr Bridge has a little amusement park called Landmark that is fun for the whole family; Moniak Winery has non-grape wines, liqueurs and mead; there are loads of walking trails, castles, hills... basically, it's awesome. The Borders is also a very beautiful area, the Isle of Skye is incredible, Pitlochry is a wonderful Victorian spa town (and where I'm getting married in October!), St. Andrews (where I work) is the home of golf, the royal romance, the Scottish reformation, the oldest university in Scotland and some gorgeous beaches, scenery, buildings and ice cream! Edinburgh is my favourite capital city ever. So yeah, Scotland for the win!
Arrived as student 9/2003; Renewed student visa 9/2006; Applied for HSMP approval 1/2008; HSMP approved 3/2008; Tier 1 General FLR received 4/2008; FLR(M) Unmarried partner approved (in-person) 27/8/2009; ILR granted at in-person PEO appointment 1/8/2011; Applied for citizenship at Edinburgh NCS 31/10/2011; Citizenship approval received 4/2/2012

I so totally agree.  We spent a day in Inverness itself which is nice, but I LOVE, LOVE, LOVED the surrounding area.  It's one of my favourite places and I would go back tomorrow if I could.

I really want to get up to Scotland (as a graduate of the Univ of Edinburgh, it's been way too long since I was up there...) We haven't done too many holidays since we arrived in 2009, but just before Xmas 2010 we popped over to Paris for a week, ranted a flat near the city centre off the Internet (which was fine) and spent the week just walking around the city's different neighbourhoods and stopping in for frequent warm-up breaks in assorted creperies and cafes. We did a one-day excursion to Parc Asterix (the place all the French families go to while the tourists go to Disneyland) which the kids loved. All in all, it was a great trip, aside from the fact that it was pretty cold and snowy much of the time, but hey, what do you expect in December! We're trying to plan our summer travels now, and although part of me really wants to go back over for a visit to the US to see the people we miss, another part of me thinks it's crazy to go somewhere I've already been, when there are far more places I have yet to go, that are all (now) very close at hand -- so we're thinking maybe Greece or Italy or Istanbul or somewhere fun like that.

One of our best holidays was spent in Sorrento.  We took the ferry over to Capri for the day, spent time at Pompeii and Herculaneum, and the Archaeology museum in Naples, and of course a visit to the Amalfi Coast.  Not sure if that is such a "kid-oriented" holiday, but I thoroughly recommend to anyone who loves history!

We drove around Scotland a few years ago, and it was beautiful.  We saw Edinburgh, Ben Nevis, Skye, Inverness, and Loch Ness, and tons of little places in between.  Lots of stuff to see and do.

Outside the UK, we went to Meeru Island in the Maldives for our honeymoon, and it was the nicest place I've ever been (and I worked on a cruise ship for a few years, so I've been to some nice places).  The water was warm and clear, the fish were amazing, the islands were beautiful, the people were nice and friendly, and if someone offered me another trip I'd go right now.

dent_arthur_dent - this is a timely post as I was asked to be in a wedding in the US this summer, but we had already planned to go to Pula, Croatia and Rome this summer.
Still trying to debating whether I will be more heartsick missing the wedding or our holidays.

I love Bath for its architecture and history. The Isle of Wight is beautiful to drive around the coast and take in the views during the summer.

DrSuperL99 - Scotland sounds like an awesome holiday option! I have been really wanting to go to the Isle of Skye. I've never been, but every photo of it makes me swoon.

For day trips, I absolutely adore York.  A lot.  The best "holiday" I've taken was this year over Easter weekend where I camped out and went to Badminton (massive horseback riding event).  The combination of camping and just experiencing something that is really "only in england" was AMAZING.
So much fun!

I am going to (as much as possible) go every year! We're also thinking of going to Burghley in September! would you like to come with? Seriously. It was incredible. And the shopping. I am normally anti-shopping, but oh the shopping at these events! That combined with XC is just...well, my ideal holiday apparently!

I've gone to a bunch of places I love in England as well as some great trips outside.  My fav England locations have been Cornwall (West Coast) and Suffolk (southern bit).  There are just some gorgeous walks in both locations and quaint little villages with fabulous pubs.

Outside of the UK, my best trip was to Prague.  I just loved the city.  It's gorgeous, transportation is good and it wasn't super expensive.

I haven't had much of a chance to have a holiday since I moved here, but I did have several uni-related trips where I had the chance to go to all kinds of country houses, ruins, etc. in Scotland.  This country really is just gorgeous.  I also got to go down to Liverpool for a few days for a uni study trip and it was fantastic.  For the same reasons, I went down to Wales for a few days.  The train ride was gorgeous and it made me want to see more of Wales, without being hampered by doing research!  :)

I did have some friends come visit last June, and we hired a car and drove up through Perthshire to St. Andrews, then from St. Andrews down to Anstruther.  The weather was perfect and there aren't enough adjectives to describe just how lovely it was.

I think the thing I loved the most, however, was driving back from Mull after Christmas.  BF's family is from there and I've been before, but only on the train.  Holy cow is it an absolutely stunning drive from Oban back to Glasgow!  I couldn't look away from any of it.  It's really whet my appetite for getting more driving done around here at some point.

can't really contribute since we're not living in the UK yet, but it made me smile when Danielle mentioned the Isle Of Wight.  that's where i'll be living!
