What are your Desert Island Discs?
« on: June 03, 2011, 12:16:54 AM »
What would be your Desert Island Discs?

So many songs to choose from- from so many parts of life!!! Goodness- well here's the 8 I picked:

1.) Franklin's Tower - The Grateful Dead - Because no matter what kind of mood I am in, I can just spin and dance to this song - if I'm sad, I'm instantly happy, if I'm glad, I'm euphoric.  My feel good song!!!

2.) The Planets - Gustav Holst. Just gorgeous! If I think of the actual planet Mars, I can just hear Holst's Mars playing.  It captures the imagination. I could listen forever!

3.) Tomorrow is Forever - Dolly Parton & Porter Wagoner.  Dolly's singing just gives me the chills and I love the harmonies. Love, forgetting the past and moving forward!

4.) That's How Strong My Love Is - Otis Redding.  A song for a very deep, deep friendship of mine.

5.) The Jeep is Jumpin' -Duke Ellington.  Because I love swing music, play trombone in a swing band, and because its one of my favourites!

6.) I'm Looking Through You- The Beatles.  Rubbersoul was my first Beatles album I purchased on CD, having worn out my Dad's vinyl. Rubbersoul was also first British vinyl album that I bought to add to my collection when I moved here.   I listened to this song for HOURS as a teenager, learned it on the guitar -it summed up lots of odd and strange changes and angst in me as a teenager.

7.) Celebration - Chinese New year Global Gala Orchestra.  After touring around China studying tai chi, I couldn't get enough of the music I heard. Such strange, haunting hymns and melodies foreign to the Western ear and I was drawn in.  'Celebration' pulls many of these sounds together for me in one overture.

8.) Malaguena- Stan Kenton.  Marching Band, my first year of Uni.  We played this song, it gave me goosebumps.  I was sucked into it, louder, faster, power.  And through marching band I met so many of my dearest friends, that I still keep to this day.  It reminds me of all the fun I had in college, reminds me of drum corps memories, and of some of the best musicians I have ever played with.

Oh great idea!!  I'll have to think of mine.  Is it only 8 songs, or can there be more/less?  :D

It's only 8 songs/tracks. I think classical pieces somehow count as 1 track though- and those can be like entire albums, so there you go. But mostly its just 8 songs!! And on the show they explain why they've chosen the pieces, so we should do the same.   So choose wisely, you're stuck with these 8 on your island!  :)

1) Holland 1945-Neutral Milk Hotel.  Really hard to pick ONE NMH track, but this probably edges out the rest, narrowly.

2)Emily -Joanna Newsom  Not just because it is so long.  I love Joanna Newsom, and this song probably encapsulates everything that's wonderful about her.  Beautiful composition, moving lyrics with a touching subject (her sister, Emily who is an astrophysicist), and her unusual vocals.  Plus harps. (, pt 1, pt 2) Cold Blooded Old Times-Smog--Just because I couldn't live with never hearing Bill Callahan sing again.

3)Pink Moon-Nick Drake.  Just because it's a beautiful song.

4)Feeling Good-Nina Simone.  Nina is another of those who I would have a hard time just picking one track because I love her and practically every song she ever sang.

5)Hurt- Johnny Cash Although I like Johnny Cash a lot, picking one from him is not hard.  Very emotional song, and even if it is a cover, it feels like it's his song.

6)God Only Knows-The Beach Boys.  If this was three albums on a dessert island, it would be NMH-In the Aeroplane, Miles Davis-Kind of Blue, and The Beach Boys-Pet Sounds.  But this is probably my favourite off Pet Sounds (although Wouldn't It Be Nice is close).

7)Who Loves the Sun- Velvet Underground  Another band/artist where it's hard to pick just one.

8)Jerusalem

Sorry for the ugly looking post, btw.  I didn't know how to post Youtube links without embedding the player, but I also wanted to be able to give people a reference to listen to.

LOVE that Velvet Underground song! And add that with the Smog song and you're almost compiling the soundtrack to High Fidelity. :P

Oh great stuff you've posted Legs!

Pet Sounds and Kind of Blue both make regular appearances on my ipod  :)

It's really hard to choose just eight songs, isn't it?

Phat, we did Malaguena my senior year in HS band. It was so tough......but we had chops by December.

Brass-wise  I have been listening to Holly Cole's version of Brier and the Rose with the Canadian Brass:

1. Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #2 (Laika). It was hard to just pick one song from Funeral, but I like Laika (the dog), so I'm going with Laika (the song). Arcade Fire * Laika

2. Bjork - Pagan Poetry. My favorite Bjork song.... Bjork Pagan Poetry HD (with sound)

3. TV On The Radio - Poppy. Epic summertime song, perfect for lounging on a desert island!  TV On The Radio-Poppy

4. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps. This is a sentimental choice, as it means a lot to me and my husband. Plus a kick-ass song.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps

5. Joanna Newsom - Peach Plum Pear. Tough to choose between this one and "Sadie," but this one I think is more timeless.
Joanna Newsom - Peach Plum Pear

6. Kanye West and Jay Z - Diamonds from Sierra Leone (Remix). A hip hop masterpiece, and a case where the remix is far better than the original.
Kanye West - Diamonds From Sierra Leone (Remix Feat. Jay-Z)

7. M.I.A. - $20. I was going to pick "Where is my Mind" by the Pixies, but I realized I could pick this song, which samples that one, and have two songs in one :D
M.I.A.- 20 DOLLAR (VIDEO)

8. Queen - Somebody to Love. Gotta have a classic, as well as a good karaoke song.
Queen- Somebody to Love

OP neglected the book and luxury item. For the book, I would have to pick Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke, my favorite novel. For the luxury item, I would have to say a cask of ale :D
In 900 years of time and space, I've never met anyone who wasn't important.

See I don't think I'd do desert island very well, because I just need people.  Much as I'd like to be on one for a break away from everything, I'd miss people too much.

So having given this a lot of thought, I'd pick discs that reminded me of all the people I love (or loved) & good times we had together and at different periods of my life.

1) Will the Circle Be Unbroken - Nitty Gritty Dirt Band & friends from Volume II, 1989, featuring many artists including Johnny Cash, Roy Acuff, Bruce Hornsby, Michael Martin Murphey, Earl Scruggs, Randy Scruggs, Ricky Skaggs, Emmylou Harris, Rosanne Cash, Chet Atkins, Marty Stuart, the Carter Family...classic American traditional music, reminding of me of my roots & my family, and great for singing along (we sang the songs of childhood / hymns of faith that made us strong / ones that Mother Maybelle taught us / hear the angels sing along)

2) Nightswimming - REM...a song that always calls to mind, for me, maybe 2-3 hot Kansas summers when my mom, my brother, friends and me would go swimming in the evenings at a nearby lake until it got dark & the moon was out.  Long gone happy times before a lot of bad stuff happened to our family.  But back then we were all still together & still having a happy family life.

3) The Girl from Ipanema - Astrud & João Gilberto & Stan Getz...Reminds me of all the craziness of my university days when I made friends with a lot of Brazilians.  And I ended up going to Rio de Janeiro when I was 21 years old to visit a friend there for a month over Christmas & New Year's.  It was my first international trip (not counting crossing the border in Mexico) & 21 being a perfect age to be in Rio.  My love of tropical everything goes back to that trip.  A hot, green New Year's Eve & fireworks off the hotels all along the long strip of beaches, including Ipanema, along which my friends & I walked until dawn.

4) Going Down the Road Feeling Bad - as covered by the Grateful Dead...One of the good memories involving my first husband, who was a huge Grateful Dead fan, although I think the memory stems from before we actually married.  We had visited a winery town in Missouri for a long weekend & had rather a good night in the bars...worst hangover ever the following day...and when this song came on the cassette tape as we were driving home - well it was just so appropriate & we laughed our heads off.

5) Moon River - Audrey Hepburn - the Andy Williams version was DH's & my wedding processional song.  Both my mother & I loved this song, and the movie it came with (Breakfast at Tiffany's) - so it also reminds me of her.  The lyrics really seem to fit DH and me also.

6) Good Intent - Rosanne Cash - from her album of mourning Black Cadillac over her parents.  Loss being as big a part of life as is love, but sometimes we don't always have adequate language for loss - this album is about as good as it gets.  "Seeing behind the darkened veil" but also moving on with good intent to a new place you belong - your "true happy home".

7) Bowl of Oranges - Bright Eyes - Great stream of consciousness at the beginning, moving on to the profound.  We are individual fragments of an overall whole that is beautiful.
7) The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - Roberta Flack...because DH thinks he merits more than one song on this list, and I agree.  And that's how we roll.  [smiley=love.gif]

8 ) One Love - the Playing for Change version, featuring Keb' Mo', Manu Chao & other musicians from around the world - All those beautiful international voices joining together.  A song that brings us full circle.

Luxury item - a good bed

Definitely! I am an introvert, not needing people for my energy, but I just love my family and friends too much to stay away! :P

Great music Mrs R - Lots of that stuff is definitely on my wavelength!

Interesting to read people's choices.

Book-The Foxfire Book (first of the Foxfire series).  You get the complete works of Shakespeare and the Bible.  I'd pick something else, but nothing would add to that enough to outweigh the usefulness of Foxfire.

Luxury- A toss up between a bunch of good pot seeds (not that I smoke now, but if stuck on an island I would) and a Gerber tool.
