Moving shortly to the UK (new here)
« on: August 29, 2004, 08:54:41 PM »
Hello, my husband and I (and cat) are moving from the Bay Area to Oxford at the end of the year. I've gotten useful info from the rest of you, and finally decided that it was time to stop playing solitaire  ;)  Nervous and excited about the move.

Congratulations on the move.  It will be much more exciting than solitaire!   ;D

Pompoy, welcome to the site.  :)  Are either of you from the UK or is this living out the dream (so to speak)?  ;)  Either way, good luck to you!

Hi, Pompoy. Where are you from in the Bay Area? I'm from Santa Cruz originally but lived in SF for more than 10 years. I live in south Buckinghamshire - quite an easy train ride to the Oxford area! Welcome to UKY!

Welcome!  I personally left all of my eletrical stuff at home but wish I could have brought it!

Sorry for the tardiness. I'm still getting the hang of checking three e-mail accounts, reading through several forums, etc, without spending half the day ..Too much info. ;D

geally, AnneG, and wench--in answer to your questions. Neither my husband and I are originally from the US actually  ;) I'm originally from Singapore and he from Greece. We met in New Jersey, when we were going to uni. Spent 10 years in the NY/NJ area, then we moved to Oakland, California, where we've been for almost 4 years. We've been to the UK several times before, but as you know, holidays can be such a different experience from living in a place. The move is quite unexpected; I never thought that we would be leaving the US after having spent 14 years here and getting the Green Card and all that. So it's starting all over again in a new country, especially when you've tried really hard to adapt to a previous country.

Sorry for the mouthful...

Hello!  Well, this is all new to me.  It's not a sure thing, but my husband is securing a job over there.  We're in Michigan.  I'm excited, nervous, apprehensive, to say the least.  Never been there, although it sounds like an awesome place.  We have a 9 year old son and a dog.  The move will probably take place the first of the year.  Any helpful hints for a newbie, would be greatly appreciated.  I have NO IDEA what to expect.  Oh, we're probably going to reside in or near Cambridgeshire.  Is that good or bad?  Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi, cindyls. Cambridgeshire is lovely - where exactly will you be (or do you know?) It'll be an adventure for you for sure.

Make sure you start the PETS passport scheme soon - it takes 6 months of vet work and paperwork to bring an animal over!

Good luck and welcome to UKY....
