I'm negotiating the whole private/NHS consultant thing right now due to some complications with my pregnancy. I don't know if it's in the case in London, but it seems that outside of London there aren't really any specialists who have only a private practice. Most of them are NHS consultants who do private consultations on the side. Because my insurance won't cover anything more than the first consultation, I've had to get another referral from my GP to continue to see the same doctor under the NHS. The big difference so far-- whereas my appointment was set up in a matter of days under private insurance, with the NHS I'm expecting it to take a couple of weeks. That seems to be the way of things...
