When I lived in my last place in California, I shared a condo with a co-worker. The laundry room was a space about the size of our current wardrobe-just enough to fit a washer and dryer, facing eachother. Shared between ourselves and at least 5 other people. It meant opening our garage, in a dodgey part of town, going outside to the laundry room, punching a code into the laundry room door, while lugging laundry and laundry soap, etc. Then, paying $.75 for the privilege of washing, and $.50 for drying. I totally LOVE having our washer/dryer in the kitchen! We have a combo one, since our place didn't have hookups or space for anything else. It took a lot of getting used to, but, DH and I are ok with it now.

this thread just reminds me of a woman I knew with an Aga. it was not unusual, especially in the winter, to go to her house and find freshly washed and folded laundry, including knickers, drying neatly on top of the Aga. ;D

This!  This is what my MIL does, and it drives me nuts!  And it's not just during the winter, either.  And she leaves them there for days, sometimes.  Thing is, we have a drier.  If the clothes can't dry thoroughly on the line outside, then why not just put them in the drier?  Having laundry stacked above the stove, getting all full of bacon/cigarette odors, does my head in.

Yeah in britain most washes are in the kitchen.

I would highly recomend getting a dryer because in the winter months clothes will be hung everywhere to dry specially if you have children.  you can put most dryers anywhere mine is in the bedroom and I fold and put away up there.

Quick question to throw in here.. Are the washing machines that are in the kitchen also dryer combos? Or do you have to dry everything on the line?  ???

It depends on what you buy or what your landlord/lady supplies. If you have a washer-dryer, then that's what it'll be. If you only have a washing machine, then it'll only be a washing machine.

You can get washer dryers but I have found that seperates are better with a washer dryer you can only dry half the load you can wash so you have to wash it then halve it and dry twice if that makes sense.  With seperates you can wash the load then transfer it to the dryer the load in the summer though we brits use the line or rotary dryer if you don't have much garden (yard) space.

Well it's hard to tell in pictures because the combos also look the same as just a washer. So if they only include a washer and let's say for arguments sake there's not yard/garden space then where does one dry their clothes? LOL

You either buy a clothes airer or drape things over the radiator.

In my spare bedroom, at the back of my kitchen, and in the hallway  ;)

Well I have a full washer and dryer located in the hallway of my condo so no "official" utility room, but it definetely wasn't in the kitchen for all to see. That's probably one of the few things that semi irks me about some of the flats/homes available in the UK. Just something I gotta get over I guess  :P LOL
