And I am attending a HUGE, POSH WEDDING in a week... And I have sent in the paperwork for my NI, but NOT gotten the number yet...

So, what do I do?

I am in England. I do not even know if it would be covered if I did have my NI number.

Can I just call a dentist here? Go in and pay to have it mended?

Any idea what it might cost?

UGH... It keeps cutting my tongue...

Any info or help at all would be AWESOME!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!!!!

Married 04/13/11, in NYC.
Applied for Spouse Visa the following week, with express service, and I was approved 4 days later!
Arrived in the UK 05/20/11.
I took the stupid LIUK Test Oct. 2012.
We were granted ILR In Person in Croydon on 04/23/13.
Got BRP 2 days later, in mail box - it just appeared.

NI is national insurance number and has nothing to do with healthcare so don't worry about that. It really depends on your area- you just need to ring local dentists- if you are very lucky some will be taking new NHS patients which will make the cost a lot less. Otherwise you just need to go as a private patient and pay the full price. Not a clue as to what it costs-- sorry!

Thank you for that link.

"NI is national insurance number and has nothing to do with healthcare so don't worry about that."

I'm confused... National Insurance IS health care, as in seeing a dentist. No?

Don't they need my NI number for me to see a dentist?

Or are you saying that I can just go, and pay them, without having the NI number yet?

Thank you!

Your NI number is different from a NHS number and, I believe, is used more for tax purposes than anything else. You don't need a NI number for medical treatment.

I hope you can get it fixed quickly!

The national insurance number is for taking the taxes out of your pay-- it is not for receiving health benefits. You can receive your health care without a national insurance number.

If you can't fet an appointment with an NHS dentist quickly enough, see if there are any dental schools in your area.  A dental student will do it more cheaply than a private dentist, and they should be supervised by a 'real' dentist while they are doing it.

This is a great option! I've recieved free treatment here this way.

Lara, have you registered with a GP? That puts you onto the NHS system, not the National Insurance number.  The NI is for your tax code. Here's the link on how to register with a GP

http://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/1095.aspx?CategoryID=68&SubCategoryID=158

As for dentists, you'll need to check your area if there's an NHS dentist who can take you on straight away- If you're needing:
•veneers and palatal veneers: new surfaces for the front or back of a tooth
•inlays, pinlays and onlays: used to restore damaged teeth

It looks like it costs £204 in England on the NHS.

Otherwise, if you can't get an NHS dentist, then you'll need to go private.  My private dentist is actually very much the same pricing as the NHS.   Likewise, Andee's suggestion of a dental school is a great one.

I called a local dentist on NHS and they said "come fill out the forms and we will see you in a few days - after we get you in the system."

So, all good I guess!

Thank you!

I hope the fact that I am not registered with a GP yet is not a problem... Maybe I can just pick one from a book of available ones, and change it later, or something, if I need to be registered with one... We gonna see!

Thanx... all you awesome people who always help me... you rock!!!!

I'm not sure if it will be or not -I don't know if they're seperate or together!  You can always call the dentist back and ask before you waste a trip.

You don't need to be registered with a GP to use an NHS dentist. I've been to an NHS dentist, but haven't registered with a GP as of yet.
