Hello from Virginia!
« on: June 21, 2011, 10:08:21 PM »
Hello all!

After much soul-searching and late night talks, my husband and I have decided to take the plunge and relocate to England. It's been a dream of mine for about 30 years, and we feel that the time is right. My husband has started looking for a job via a London contact he has (through his job). Our time frame is probably 2013, since we are waiting to receive our daughter from Korea (we are adopting), and we can't leave the state until 9 months after we receive her. While my husband works on the job hunt, I am in charge of logistics. There is so much info out there, it's kind of overwhelming! Can someone recommend a good website to start with? I need to find out about shipping our stuff, getting our pets there (is there a limit to the #?), getting my kids in the school system, renting a house, etc. I do know that we don't want to live in London, but would prefer something more suburban. I have to say that I am overwhelmed. Is there some kind of service that helps with this sort of stuff? Someone that finds you a place to live, helps with paperwork, etc.? Help!

-Kelly

hello, kelly!   first and foremost, welcome to UKY!

i can't be of much help in answering the grand majority of your questions, but if you have a look around the boards here, i'm sure you'll find relevant threads to answer your questions.  i'm sure someone else who's done it all already will be able to point you in the right directions.   also, congratulations on adopting!  very good on you and your family!  best of luck~

Welcome.  Definitely post in the visa section for any questions regarding visas.  Unfortunately, coming here to live has become a lot tougher in recent years, but if you explain some specifics of your plans, someone will let you know if the route is feasible or not.

How exciting about the adoption.  We're considering it now, and just a domestic adoption (here) seems a bit overwhelming.  I can't imagine what it's like to go the foreign route. Congratulations on your new addition to your family.

Welcome to UKY and congrats on the adoption!! Exciting times ahead for sure!!

As for moving I would check the visa board out as mentioned since US citizens can't just move.  Its a process ;-)

Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the greetings! My husband is working with a guy in London on the job front. We will def. have a job for him lined up before we make the move.

Yes, this adoption sure has been exciting (and long!!). We can't wait to get her. This is like a very long pregnancy.  :)

I will start wading through this forum and website and see what all I can find. Glad to "meet" you all!

Kelly

Hi Kelly!

How are you? What part of Virginia do you live in? I used to live there too in Lynchburg. A great book I recently picked up to help me with my journey is Rules, Britannia: An Insider's Guide to Life in the United Kingdom by Toni Summers Hargis

Thanks,

Hi David!

Thanks for the book suggestion! I just added it to my Amazon wish list! We live in Fredericksburg, which is about 50 minutes SW of DC. We lived in DC for a couple of years, Falls Church before that, and Raleigh, NC for many years before that. We are ready for a change.  :D
