Council tax -student
« on: July 01, 2011, 02:34:36 PM »
Hey all,

Question for some friends. They aren't living together right now but intend to share a house next year. One guy (A) is a continuing student. The other (B) is finishing an undergrad and starting a PhD, so would be liable for council tax for a few months if they moved in to the new place now. He is living in student halls at the moment.

If they both move in now, but B goes to the US and only reenters the UK on the start date of his new course, could he avoid paying the council tax? His stuff would be in the house but the council wouldn't know (he's happy to pay the rent for that period), and the halls will let him stay until his flight. Person A might also go to the US but as he is a student, won't need to pay any council tax anyway.

The person who will be doing a pHD is still considered a student. The time in which he is finished with his undergrad up until he starts his Phd can be classed as summer vacation. So as long as he communicates this to the council he shouldn't be charged any council tax anyway.

What she said.  Also, the university may be able to provide a letter to the council if you need some form of proof.  When sorting out our council tax this year, they easily found me on the university's "list" of students.. but for the boy, we had get a letter from his university stating before our council tax bill was adjusted appropriately.
