Lunch for after Embassy appointment
« on: July 09, 2011, 10:51:04 PM »
We're going to be meeting up with a friend after Thomas' appointment in a few weeks and are looking for a good place to have lunch between the Embassy and Euston Station.

Considering Tortilla Mexican Grill www.tortilla.co.uk  anyone eaten there?

Garfunkels on Argyll St is our fallback I think

Any other suggestions?  Need to be baby-on-lap friendly as we'll have Thomas with us.

Scandinavian Kitchen is relatively close.  It's where we go when we stop at the consulate (or anywhere near there or any excuse because I love it so):

Sounds intriguing.  Reasonable prices too.  How are the portions?

It's definitely a lunch place.  If you are looking for something for your noon meal which would be considered a main meal of a day, you would probably be better off somewhere else.  However, you shouldn't go away hungry from this place, and you can always order more.  They have sandwiches which are open faced, but they do closed ones as well.  Usually they do soup.  I think they usually have meatballs and potatoes (think Ikea lunch), hotdogs, or another savoury dish.  They usually have a few choices of salads and at least 3 different dessert choices.  Their regular filter coffee is great and served in these really cool mugs.  You order at the counter and seating is very casual, and having your child on your lap would be no problem.  I'd suggest you try to get a seat away from the groceries as people do actually shop there.

Plus you can pick up some Scandinavian groceries.  I really recommend stuff like cloudberry or lingonberry jam (the latter is treated like cranberry sauce and served with savoury dishes), some of the licorice (especially the Turkish Pepper candy) if you like that, really awesome cracker bread or Nordic cheeses.  I usually end up spending at least as much on groceries as our lucnch.

We spend loads at IKEA food so I'm sure we would.

We've been to the Tortilla at Canary Wharf, and it is yummy. It's really just like Chipotle though. I don't really eat "in town" a whole lot. Tend to stay out east. Hope you find something nice!

Seconded, Tortilla is a lot like Chipotle. It's ok, but nothing special.

LOVE Truc Vert.  LOVE!  They have the world's best eggs benedict, but really nice lunch and dinner as well.

Cheesy B, you should write a London food guide thingie.

Right near Baker Street Station (due north of the embassy) are our default thai restaurants.  Both do good lunch combos for £7-8ish and we've brought our baby to both many times with no issue at all:

Monkey & Me at 115 Crawford Street W1J 2JQ

and Two Point at 26 Crawford Street W1H 1LL

You can then easily catch a bus to Euston from in front of the Baker Street Station, which is less than 10 minutes away.  I'd say the walk from the embassy to either restaurant is about 20 minutes.  It's just under a mile walk.

I have a slight preference for Monkey.   :)

There is a Giraffe in Marylebone on Blandford Street just off Marylebone High Street which is always heaving with kids and strollers:

On Baker Street there is a Canteen which is quite big and has booths in the back:
