I hate flying at the best of times, so I'm not sure I can handle no frills!  :)  Plus I try to rack up as many frequent flyer miles as I can so I want to stick to Continental, or at least another carrier in the Star Alliance so that I can do that.

I did find a flight back where the layover is not 10 hours, so I'm feeling a lot better about it!

Thanks everyone for the help!  I'm used to teensy airports on this side of the pond, so I need the insight!  :)

Be careful about continental at the moment, they're codesharing with United until their merger and the united flights are AWFUL, terrible food and no entertainment.
I love continental and hate United.

Ooooh thank you!!  I knew they were merging, but wasn't aware of those issues.  I think I'm going to need to call them up and ask a few things before I decide to book it anyway.

See, this is another reason why I wish my normal flight would just go down in price.  I love it.  It's practically doorstep to doorstep, small-ish flight, your standard Continental entertainment... sigh.  :-\\\\

I was pleasantly surprised last week when I flew back from the US - when I booked my flights, I didn't realise Continental and United were merging, so I thought it was a bit weird that 3 of my 4 flights were Continental and the last one (long-haul back home) was United.

So I prepared myself for a not-so-great flight home with United - however, it turned out that the plane back home was a Continental plane after all and it was listed as a Continental flight at the airport (the United flight number was just the codeshare), so it was a better flight home than I was expecting :).

Definitely understand about the FF miles! I managed to get to Silver Elite on Continental for 2010 and now in 2011 I haven't gotten on a plane to take advantage of my benefits! :(

I haven't flown United yet but they do have Economy+, which is free for Elite members, so I definitely want to try them out for that alone. I do love Continental, though, and I hope that the merger doesn't change *too* much. Most flights into/out of EWR are going to be Continental-operated, at least for now.

I just got stung on a United flight with a continental codeshare from LHR to OHare. Worst flight EVER. They only had communal movies, they played one...it was Beastly, a retelling of beauty and the beast with Vanessa Hudgens.

Thank GOD for my ipad.

To be fair the food on Continental has to be the worst food of any airline, but United is no better and more stingy and the 777 have the tighter configurations.

Was quite annoyed really, if I'd known I would have flown BA over United (was a work trip).

Aww everyone's hatin' on United! I've never had a bad time with them. Apart from when one of the flight attendants yelled at me because I asked to borrow her pen and couldn't give it back to her for a while because the seat belt sign was on. She accused me of trying to steal it. She went mental but that's her, not the airline lol.

Communal films?! That's awful and I've never had that happen before. How annoying!

Thanks for the help on this everyone!  Turns out the price went down considerably on a direct from Edinburgh-NJ and back, so I took it!  Though this information may come in handy again around Christmas time.  :)

Oh, and I checked, and it's definitely operated by Continental.  I take comfort in the fact that I can have my mediocre meal in my sardine can seat, while watching my own screen.  :P My mom agreed will many of you that United stinks.  :D
