Layover in Heathrow???
« on: July 11, 2011, 07:55:57 AM »
I'm looking at flights to the US for the end of August/beginning of September.  I can get a cheaper one from Edinburgh that has a layover in Heathrow, but it's only 1hr and 30 minutes.  I wouldn't be changing airlines or anything (it's continental BTW), but is this doable?  I've only flown to London once and it was from Dublin and I don't even remember which airport it was, so any insight would be helpful!  :)

I have had a layover from Heathrow when I flew from Manchester to LAX. It was very simple to (and very quick!) go to the other terminal, just took a bus. Actually it was far easier than I thought it would be, you'll be fine. :)

If you're not changing airlines, it's perfectly doable. I once had a layover in Heathrow of 2 hours and I couldn't get through in time. I was 2 minutes late and they didn't let me in!!! I was so angry. I had to wait 5 hours for another flight. This included a switch to a different airline and immigration so you should be allright.

Okay great!  Thanks guys!  Of course, upon further inspection, the return flight would have me sitting in Heathrow for almost 10 hours!  Not ideal, but I may have to bite the bullet on that.  I wish I could just average them out!  :P

You could get from Heathrow to Kings Cross and take a train to Edinburgh in less than ten hours!

I know!  I literally just went "DUH!" to myself when you said that. Hahaha  I do have a 16-25 railcard that will get me 1/3 off the price, so might see how much that will cost to do.  Could be my best option at the moment since everything else is pretty ridiculously priced from Scotland at the moment.  My old direct Glasgow-Newark standby is the highest I've ever seen it.  :-\\\\

I just noticed that myself. Usually we take Continental EWR-GLA, and when I was booking my flight over the weekend, the fare was well over $2k  :o :o I've never seen it that high!

Yeah, it's crazy!  In the 3 years I've been using that flight, the highest price I ever paid for it was around $650 after taxes.  I once got it for around $400-$450 after taxes.  All of sudden we're a hotspot!  :D

And here I thought we could keep Glasgow undiscovered! Looks like the cat is out of the bag!   :P

Are you sure that you don't have to change airlines? Double check that the leg into Heathrow isn't a codeshare (with BMI?).

Hah! It is! Thanks!  :)  Will that make a huge difference?  I'm probably not going to need to re-check my bags, right?  So that should help?  I haven't booked it yet anyway, and the price just went down!  :D

It didn't make a big difference for me. I flew BA from Manchester to London, and then switched terminals to fly Virigin to LAX. They moved my bags for me. Easy peasy.

You won't have to re-check your bags but you might have to change terminals. I have no idea how much time that would take, I've only flown out of Heathrow on Continental.

As long as you're going to have to fly out of a London airport, have you looked into Iceland Express for super cheap fares into EWR from LGW? Very no-frills and all but also (can be) very cheap.

Changing terminals at LHR is no biggie :)

I hate flying at the best of times, so I'm not sure I can handle no frills!  :)  Plus I try to rack up as many frequent flyer miles as I can so I want to stick to Continental, or at least another carrier in the Star Alliance so that I can do that.

I did find a flight back where the layover is not 10 hours, so I'm feeling a lot better about it!

Thanks everyone for the help!  I'm used to teensy airports on this side of the pond, so I need the insight!  :)
