Drive Thru I wish!!
« on: July 17, 2011, 11:07:13 PM »
Right after visiting California i discovered everything had a drive thru and i liked it.... i mean here we have KFC, MC D's and Burger king not much choice there but in America you have starbucks, mexican, taco bell and lots of other types

Even you had drive thru banks which when i saw them my mouth dropped

I do wish the UK had some of these things, i really fount in California for how much they have speedy things and they rush in traffic they are quiet laid back about everything else

Any other things you can think of that would make your life a little easier what you have/had there compared to here?

I just want to transplant all of Southern Cali here because it's where I'm from. Impossible, I know, but a girl's gotta have a dream! ;)

There's a drive-thru Starbucks just outside Shewsbury on the A49 :P. It's the only one I've noticed here in the UK so far, but then I don't go to Starbucks very often.

I was amazed when I saw a drive-thru bank in the US for the first time... I'm used to it now though, as I've lived in the US twice since then, but it was a pretty strange concept to me at first :P.

Not much, really, to be honest. The only thing I really miss from the US that I would love to have here is Netflix (I'm signed up to Lovefilm but it's more expensive and not nearly as good)!

I'm a Brit who lived in the US for 18 months in total on student visas (2003/04 and 2008) and I have to say that I much prefer the UK these days (It was once a life-long dream to live in the US, but 10 years, 2 student visas and a reality check later, I really don't have any desire to live there again anytime soon - great to visit, but not so much to live there).

I didn't have a car in the US, so I was basically restricted to either taking the bus (very scary, as the area wasn't that safe and the bus patrons were mostly homeless people and scary drunks and druggies) or not going anywhere at all except the supermarket 20 minutes walk away, or trying to cycle 30 minutes to the shopping mall in 38-degree heat - Drive Thrus were no use to me then because I couldn't drive to any of them :P.

I like to walk places, so give me smaller English towns and cities with easily accessible shops within walking distance and better public transport any time :).

Actually netflix are increasing there prices by 60% very soon. I think it might be more the fact my girlfriend lives there which makes the place more appealing but it was just the lifestyle for me i fell in love with but i fell in love with her alot more

My husband said that to me on his last trip in 2008. We talk about it all the time! Pm me for places to go-although, she's probably taken you to them already! ;D

Drive thru banks are pretty much standard now in the US.

Drive-through everything is one of the aspects of the US that I like the least. In my opinion, America needs to shift away from its car-centric culture very soon. It's not doing any favours to the environment or to people's health levels. I much prefer living a more natural life where I can walk to the bank.

Not a day goes by where I don't miss Netflix.  :(  At this point, I think it's the only thing I really, really miss.  I'm over Target, I'm over Mexican restaurants everywhere, I'm over iced tea as an option at a restaurant, but I just can't get over Netflix!  :P  :)

Is this actually an issue?  Most places that have a drive through option at a bank also have a walk in option.

I guess if people want walkable places in the US they need to move to the northeast?  I had about 7 banks within a 15 minute walk of my house growing up and the closest one here is about 1 hour and I don't live in a rural area.

I suppose the issue is getting people to walk, in many cases the options are there.

Me, too.

I grew up without a car, though, so the only time I ever went to a drive through in the US was when I was with someone else.

I remember when I was much younger, visiting a boyfriend who lived in a Chicago suburb, and being amazed that he could do his banking without gettting out of the car.

We have drive through McDonald's here in Yorkshire, though.  To me, that is plenty.

I think it is awful the way  in some parts of America, it is culturally acceptable to never get off your ass.

Drive thru's for me in the states were actually more of a hassle for me.  They clogged the parking lot and I found it was almost always faster to go in and order.  And for banks, it is a pain (from the banks side) except for Texas where they are stand alone from the actual bank so someone doesn't have to stop what they are doing every 2 minutes.

However I also miss convenience stores on every corner, and stores being open past 4:30!

I do like the fact that I can go to Morrisons at 8pm and there's barely anyone there though. makes shopping easy.

Of course the option is there. That's not the point. But this:

I think it is awful the way  in some parts of America, it is culturally acceptable to never get off your ass.

This! This! This! This is the issue.

American puts all the emphasis on convenience, at the cost of everything that's good and natural about life. Just my opinion, of course.
