Taking my brit to Florida
« on: July 27, 2011, 05:10:06 AM »
Still in a LDR, but my brit wants a tan and some sunshine. :P Sadly he won't be making it to my part of the US while it is still summer, so we are planning to meet in Florida at the beginning of his visit and fly back to Michigan after a few nights, as it's cheaper that way....

Anyways, I'm posting to see if anyone could recommend some nice holiday areas in Florida that would satisfy a brit. He wanted to go to Miami, but I easily talked him out of it. We definitely want somewhere along the coast, maybe even the gulf. We plan on staying in a hotel right on or near the beach. Somewhere that isn't too "touristy" but still has bars and restaurants right off the beach, and maybe even a little downtown area or some shops. Not exactly looking for a party scene(I'm imagining MTV Spring Break, please no!), but more of a younger crowd as we are both in our early/mid twenties. I don't know much about Florida except for Orlando and Ft Lauderdale, and I've been to Cocoa Beach once. So not only do I want to make my boyfriend happy but I also would like to see somewhere I haven't been. Any recommendations would be appreciated! Thanks!

My folks live on the gulf coast at Bradenton and the area is very nice.  AnnaMaria Island, Longboat Key.  Just don't go wandering about in Sarasota at night!

It's a tough one....'tacky' is built into the soul of Florida. You don't want to go too far in the other direction and end up with a bunch of lizard-like retirees puttering around on golf carts. The Keys perhaps?

The beaches are nicer on the west coast.
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

Pensacola Beach.  It's on the Gulf, and it's lovely.
On s'envolera du même quai
Les yeux dans les mêmes reflets,
Pour cette vie et celle d'après
Tu seras mon unique projet.

Je t'aimais, je t'aime, et je t'aimerai.
