Yeah I know it aired in 2006, but I'm making an effort to get aquainted with British tv programs haha. I'm actually watching these free on Youtube. Told my bf about it and he started laughing at me  :P Said I should just watch the ORIGINAL Hollyoaks.. Maybe I'm diggin the "late night" one haha The actors are quite nice to look at ;) I will say (not trying to offend anyone when saying this) I think the acting in this show is crap, hope not ALL of the English programs are like this..
Met at 2012 London Olympics| Engagement 4-25-13| Married 7-30-13| Hired immigration lawyer 9-13 (waste of time)| Applied for Spousal Visa online 12-27-13| Biometrics completed 1-2-14| Spousal & dependent visas submitted 1-10-14| Application is being processed email 1-13-14| Decision has been made email 1-21-14| Received approved visas 1-24-14| Arrived in London 3-9-14 YAY!!

I think Hollyoaks is pretty much seen as pretty bad acting and writing-wise, and I think people often watch it to pick on it. I am not saying there aren't genuine fans, because I know there are.  It's just one of those shows that draws out the sarky side in some people. There's bad writing and acting in all British soaps, but they tend to be a few notches higher calibre than most American soaps.  There also is pretty good writing and decent acting.

I definitely wouldn't judge English or British programs by Hollyoaks. It is a soap after all, but when it comes to soaps, British soaps tend to be a bit grittier than American soaps and less far fetched (although they have their moments).  I started watching Coronation Street and Emmerdale when I first moved here, but switched to Eastenders and sometimes Casualty and Waterloo Road (although some people might not consider them soaps, I do).  Then there's The Archers, which is a radio soap that I follow a bit. I didn't watch any soaps in the States, but have managed to get sucked into some of the British ones.

Sometimes they show older soaps on PBS in the states (depending on the area), so you might be able to get an idea about some of the soaps here.

Oddly, a lot of comic actors or even comedians end up on soaps here, and it's not unusual to see an ageing star end up doing some time on some of the soaps.

I watch Hollyoaks! I have done for years (I am the UKC in our marriage) Its my one guilty pleasure and DH really can't stand the show so I have to record it and watch it when he's not around! I agree the acting is bad but its because they generally hire for looks rather than acting skills.

The late night versions are usually a bit better than the soap itself (they're only on for a week usually) I don't remember watching Hollyoaks in the City but I watched one not long ago that had some UFC guy in it :)

I honestly don't know anyone else that watches it though so I usually keep it to myself haha

If you're wanting to get more into British programs, I wouldn't really recommend Hollyoaks either, unless you like cheesy, dumb soap operas. I have to agree with Legs about the show. I had a friend over before, and she wondered if she could put it on. I was a bit iffy, and suggested the Simpsons instead..

If you want to get more aquainted with good quality British shows, I would suggest Fawlty Towers (Comedy Gold!)- one of the best shows ever made, in my opinion. Black Books is really good, as well as The IT Crowd, The Inbetweeners, Red Dwarf, Bottom, Dr. Who is quite popular.. These are all comedy (minus Dr. Who), and I'm not sure if that's what you prefer, but it's still a suggestion. ;)

Believe it or not I actually own Fawlty Towers on dvd lol, I inherited it through my ex in laws, but have yet to watch it. So I think I'll work on that ;) I think my bf watches the Inbetweeners and I have seen a few episodes of Dr. WHo :) Any suggestions for period pieces? Romantic dramas etc?

Awesome! You should definitely watch it! It's the best! :D

As for period pieces, I think there's North & South, I've never watched it, but it has good reviews on Netflix. I know theres more, but I can't remember any at the top of my head. I can't help you with the Romantic dramas either, when it comes to t.v., I lean more towards sitcoms, docs, and cartoons. :P
If you have Netflix, that should help! :)

I'm already a step ahead of ya (watched North and South a couple of weeks ago) believe me I'm scouring Netflix for Period Pieces in Drama/Romance! I can't help it I'm a hopeless romantic when it comes to shows/movies/plays etc.. But a good laugh is always in order too! I may start watching Fawlty Towers today! ;D

Ah, you are indeed. :P I think there are Jane Austen ones, but again, I really can't remember them.
Fawlty Towers is on over here; the husband and I are sat in front of it, of course!

Some good dramas/shows are Downton Abbey, Doc Martin, Spooks (MI5), Law & Order UK (I quite like it), Sherlock, Mistresses. In fact - start watching Mistresses immediately. It is so fantastically written, shot and acted. I could go on and on about great British dramas.

I like Hollyoaks. It's fun and silly and there's good eye candy.

Soap operas aren't meant to be intellectually stimulating.

And I don't feel like I want to drown myself in the river at the end of an episode, like I do after watching Eastenders.

I tried so hard to watch Eastenders. I felt like culturally it was something I needed to know about. Couldn't get through one episode. Not my bag at all.

Hollyoaks is probably the only soap that doesn't make you want to jump off a cliff. all the rest of them were created because people want drama in the life but continuous death or cheating or lying isn't my bag either and im english lol. yet again people seem to love it maybe because it makes them feel better about there life like jeremy kyle....

I watch fictional TV because I want to escape. If I want to hear about misery, I can watch the news. (I have to admit I do watch EE sometimes, with DH.)

It's all well and good if you don't like something, but you probably shouldn't try to explain why others might want to watch something or not.  It can come off as a bit insulting.
