declaring a one off £400 payment
« on: July 31, 2011, 10:43:41 PM »
Hi all! i was advised that i might get an answer in this area of the forum.

I am english, and my wife is american with permission to work in uk.

I work in an office, and earlier this year when we were busy, she came in and helped me out for a week, and unexpectedly, my boss said she could invoice him for £400.

So, she did that, and the money came through last month.

Now, she has no plans to come back to my office and help out again. That one £400 payment is the only work she has done / money she has earned in the 11 months that she has been living with me in the uk.

Does she need to declare it? Register as self employed? What is the procedure here?

She is currently looking for retail work, this is the only type of work she wishes to take (i.e. employed by an employer, has no desire or plans to be self employed / freelance)

thank you so much for your time, this is such a great forum

Unless your wife has total income of more than £7475 in the tax year, this doesn't need to be declared to HMRC in any way.

It does need to be reported on your wife's US tax return, but as it is earned income, she can probably take the US Foreign Earned Income Exclusion and not have to pay any US tax. There are lots of other threads in this forum describing how to use the exclusion.
