Going to make it to the USA for Thanksgiving this year and it will be the first time my UK hubs and I will be travelling together and I got a few questions. So here goes:

Most airlines now seem to allow 1 checked bag and then the 2nd is charged. Does this mean we EACH can take ONE bag or only ONE bag between us? Also about carry ons are we EACH allowed a carry on plus a personal bag (ie purse and or laptop bag)?

Immigration on entering USA and UK do we use the same line?

My hubs takes medication for blood pressure and cholesterol does he need a note from the doc about these meds or is it OK to enter USA with them?

Any help and or advice appreciated.

Sharon

Each passenger gets the listed baggage allowance. Think about it; if you were travelling alone, you couldn't take half a bag could you? ;)
I've travelled with meds of all sorts and had no problem. It's only for things that involve needles, like insulin, or oxygen that require doctors notes because they would normally be banned items. Pills and liquids under the 100mL limit are fine; liquids over the limit would need a note.
Ask at the immigration queue which one you should go in, it seems to vary by airport and when you arrive. The people working there will point you in the right direction.

As stated bags - it's per person, not per travelling group.

For immigration, it differs as it's the airline that decide which queue you go in, the guy marshalling the lines is from the airline (the IO guy told us this), so ask one of those, explain that you are married and that you are a US citizen. We've gone twice since we were married and first time they put us in the US citizen line, the 2nd time was in the "diplomat and green card" line which was empty. So seems they just try to expidiate the lines, but they are ok with you both going in together and this way your hubby won't get bombarded with loads of questions! I found it so easy last time.

Same for coming back to the UK, just ask but they normally put us through the "non EU" line,  which is normally the shortest at Manchester but wasn't last time.

From my experience-- we take a family trip to america every year and wife and kids have british passports and no visas--

We all go in the "US CITIZENS" line, to stay as a family.  Every so often the immigration officer will ask why there are foreigners on the US line so I just say we like to stay as a family, and they usually just roll their eyes and process the other 3.

As far as baggage goes, I've never had to pay for bags...some airlines may make you pay for your 2nd bag if you're bringing, but alot of airlines will also allow one bag plus "up to 2 personal checked items" per customer for free...it's such a vague statement.  I asked this year what this meant (this was Continental in Newark) and she said things like carseats, golf clubs, skiis, etc.

Carryons are easy, for the major airlines it's one carry-on plus one personal item per person (i.e. handbag, laptop, etc)
