Rubbish collection
« on: August 21, 2011, 12:21:06 AM »
Has anyone had their rubbish collection stopped because of cutbacks by the council?
They seem to have gone from one extreme to another. In the past I have seen photos of homes having different wheelies for different types of refuge and they said they were subject to heavy fines if they put items in the wrong bin. I thought that was going too far. Now they wont collect and empty the wheelies in some areas. Whats going on?
My garbage is picked up once a week. If I want to participate in recycling I have to take it to a city owned dumpsters where they have one for paper, metal and plastic.
As far as paying for the garbage pickup it is put on my monthly bill I get from the city along with other charges  such as water, sewage, electricity and the garbage.
When I lived, 6 years ago, in Las Vegas the garbage was picked up twice a week. They have since cut back to once a week but now they also have a second truck that picks up the recycled garbage each week.
All those different wheelies are unsightly but not having your rubbish pickup???
Whats your situation?
Cheers

Recently, it seems that our papers and plastics are being picked up every other week while our rubbish is being picked up every week.  It used to be that everything (rubbish, paper, plastic, food waste) was picked up every week.  We've not had any official notice of any changes to our schedule though.

The Sevenoaks council where DH and I live furnish the garbage and recycle bags.  They pick up the recycle and garbage every week and the garden waste every other week.....We don't use wheelies for our garbage other than to wheel it out to the pickup point which is at one end of the car park.  They do require you to use a wheelie bin for the garden waste with no plastic bags......we have not heard anything about them cutting back on the services here.......

I thought Pickles was gonna sort this out....

My rubbish is collected every two weeks. I don't have a rubbish bin. I leave my rubbish bags in my garden for the two weeks and put them outside on the street for pick up the night before.

My recycling gets picked up once a week. It is done by a private organization.

I assume this all comes out of my council tax bill.

ETA: The Telegraph article refers to people in rural areas. I live in a city. If you choose to live out in the country, you can't expect the same services as someone who lives in a city.

Our garbage is collected every week
Recycling every other week.

No word here that its going to stop, but our council is pretty good at getting changes out (we were notified a YEAR in advance of when our recycling would change from monthly to bi-weekly)

Sheffield City Council uses Veolia to collect our trash/recycling.

Only thing Im bothered with is if we have excess cardboard, we can no longer bundle it and leave it beside the other recycling when its collected. We used to until recently, but people complained about having to separate their recycling and put paper in a blue box and so now we can choose between the bin or the box. Because all paper should fit in the wheelie bin, they wont collect any excess. If I want the council to collect it, I have to pay them £40 to get the extra OR pay for a taxi to take us to the local recycling point as we dont drive.

We have two bins and two smaller bins.  The one big bin is for rubbish, the other big bin is for plant matter (such as leaves and the like).  One small container is primarily for plastic, metal and cardboard, while the other is primarily for glass and paper.  They all get picked up once a week - rubbish/plants on one day, recycling on another.  I don't see the bins as unsightly and prefer them to the municiple bins that we had to use when I lived in a flat - they were disgusting!

I've lived in 4 different places in the UK since 2007, and one thing that's struck me is how each council has a different plan when it comes to trash collection.  In Finsbury Park, London and also in Stroud, Gloucestershire, we put everything into trash bags, and they came to take them away once a week.  Simple.

In Great Wymondley, Hertfordshire, we separated paper and plastic into recycling bins, and put everything else into a general trash bin.  The guys would come once a week and throw everything into the same container on the truck.  This struck me as kind of stupid, but what do I know?

In Sarratt, Hertfordshire, we have the most complex system yet.  Paper, plastic and glass all have separate bins.  There's another large bin for food waste & grass clippings, a smaller bin for food waste, and a large bin for everything else.

The big food waste bin gets collected every week.  The rest is collected every other week. Originally I thought taking the general trash every two weeks might be problematic, but since we're separating food, plastic, paper and glass out of it, it's not a problem.

In all honesty, though, having 6 different containers for different types of refuse is a pain.  They take up a lot of space in our kitchen and garden, I hate having open refuse bins in the kitchen, and leaving them outside means they'll get rained on and be even more disgusting.  I know this is not the enlightened attitude I'm supposed to have toward recycling, but I don't care.   :)

We have four, two little ones and two big ones. The little ones are paper and plastic & cans respectively. The big ones are garbage and garden waste. One weeks it's garbage, the next it's the three recyclable bins.

Two weeks between pickups, and the stench of that rubbish bin in the Summer is weapons grade.

Plus, I don't believe for a second all that recycling is actually being recycled. They're too careless about how they want it prepared. What they'd have to pay staff to sort it correctly into types, remove lids and wash it all thoroughly prior to processing...I don't think the economics of recycled plastics will support it.

Aluminum, maybe yes. Glass...I dunno (it's so cheap to make glass from scratch). Plastics, probably not. Paper...never.

I agree.  Plus, if you watch the guys loading the trucks, they're pretty careless about where it all goes, meaning either a) someone at the other end is separating everything again, or b) nobody is separating anything.

We get collections of recycling one week and trash the next.  That is actually fine, but then I don't have kids.  It does not work well over the holidays though.  We didn't get a rubbish collection for a month a few Christmases ago because they didn't put in any extra collections.  It wasn't pleasant. Luckily we had the big meal at the in-laws, so there wasn't too much.

We have
1. Big black bin- rubbish.
2. Big blue Bin w/ caddy.  Recycling. All of it. Paper goes in the caddy. You can attached a bag to the front and fill it with batteries.
3. Big Green Bin- food/garden waste
4. Little green bin- We used to use it for paper before the blue bin. I think you can still use it for newspapers.

If any of the lids won't close they won't collect any of the trash.  Also, there is some weight limit, but we never hit it.

No wonder they are rioting over there ;)

Separating out the paper doesn't help, it just gives them an easy fuel source.  :)

For a number of years now we've had alternate collections. One week its general rubbish and the next week it recycleables - bin for cardboard/garden waste, one for cans/glass and one for paper.
Not seen any plans to change it
