Source for big box of baking soda?
« on: August 23, 2011, 04:29:52 PM »
Hey folks!
I'm looking for a big box of baking soda. The mondo boxes that you could get in the states in the cleaning aisles. I used to use it to clean tubs, carpets, fridges, etc, but can only find the teeny pots of the bicarbonate of soda in the cooking aisle. Any ideas?

Speaking of, I also used plain old Heinz (or store brand) vinegar for cleaning with the baking soda (doesn't that fizzing just make you feel like something great is going on ? ;) ); does anyone know what the equiv would be here? I'm assuming not malt vinegar, even the clear stuff. Maybe the pickling vinegar? Right now I'm using apple cider vinegar, but it's a bit too smelly!

Thanks all!
-Mo

Ebay or organic/natural websites seem to offer larger quanities of baking soda.

You are looking for distilled white vinegar: http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/groceries/index.jsp?bmUID=1314116298268

It basically the same thing as heinz vinegar in the states, 5% acidity, made from a grain and distilled.

Costco seems to be the answer to any question about American food! ;) I wish we had one in East Anglia. :(

Anything I can't find at the store, I go online to amazon.co.uk and usua,ly can find any and everything there. You may have to pay a little bit for shipping but it saves you running around everywhere.  ;D

I'm slightly confused--can anyone shop at Costco? I thought you needed to have a business in order to join up over here?

You dont need to have a business, but they do have strange list of things that will qualify you to become a member.  For instance, if you are a doctor or a dentist you can join.  We managed to wraggle membership out of them eventhough we didnt technically qualify, but it was a struggle.  I would suggest to anyone that is still in America, you should join or renew your current membership since an American membership is transferable over here (at least according to the girl at Costco in Reading that we spoke to).

According to their site, Costco memberships can be used anywhere worldwide.  I would print this and take it with me in case there are any objections.

This is indeed true. I've used my US membership here in the UK. The card scans fine at the checkout and once you've made your purchases, it just says US member on the receipt.

Not sure if it will suit the OP's needs, but I found a 5L jug of white vinegar for £2.80 at Hoo Hing (North Circular, West London).

The do have an online shop, but I think the shipping charges would kill the bargain.

See Woo in Reading sells baking soda. I just bought a 5kg tub last weekend and they also had a 3kg bag and a smaller bag. I also bought a 5ltr jug of vinegar and a bag of Borax. I make all my own cleaning supplies and laundry soap and they are by far the best prices I've found.

Costco Reading hasn't had the big bag of Arm & Hammer the last few times I've checked.
