Source for inexpensive tupperware food storage containers?
« on: August 27, 2011, 08:07:17 PM »
Hey all, I'm looking for those cheap plastic containers that one uses to toss leftovers in, for reheating the next day. I saw some pricy ones at Asda, but was wondering if there was a cheaper alternative.

We used to use the Glad disposables in the States (the kind you get for free with Hillshire Farms deli ham, but you can also buy them seperately).

We're in Newcastle, if that makes a difference.

Tesco & Morrisons usually have cheap ones, and I don't know if you have Wilkinsons up North? Poundland do sets of 8 650 ml containers for £1 it says on their website. Your nearest branch will be

24 - 26 Sidgate
Eldon Square
Newcastle Upon Tyne
Tyne & Wear
NE1 7AB

Tesco do 8 Smartt 650 ml boxes for £2.08

I got some really nice ones (hard plastic, tough lids) at Poundland or Wilkinsons (can't remember which.) 3 for 1 pound. However, they were rather small.

Thanks very much, all of you!

We have Poundlands and Wilkinsons both here, so I'll look in each place.

We get ours when we order takeaway. Much more practical than the Chinese cartons in the US, but somehow life has less romance.

Currys come in those type of containers as well.

Costco sells take away like containers - but its catering type bulk you'd have to purchase in.

Definitely now is the time to look for them with students going back/starting uni. You should be able to find them pretty much everywhere

The Indian place we get our take aways from prefers the aluminium trays with the paper lids. These also have potential for re-use but not for the OP's purposes  ;)

We actually got a semi decent set of containers from Primark, otherwise we just save our Chinese takeaway containers  ;D

aHHH
Where my partner orders from uses plastic still..  Im guessing the aluminium ones are better for reheating in the oven but not so great for microwaves...

I just got a set from Ikea for a little over 2 quid. It has a lot of little ones, but a good assortment overall. (at least 6 large ones, of varying depths and lengths).

Most of our collection comes from Chinese takeaway containers from the local up the road :)

When I've gone back to the States, I've stocked up on a couple packs of cheap Ziplock or Target brand plastic containers, too. We seem to use a LOT of them around here.
