Need a place that will Proctor online exams
« on: August 30, 2011, 03:09:48 PM »
Hi all, I don't know if this is the best subforum to post this one, so moderators please feel free to relocate this if there is a better place for it.

My husband has already relocated back to Scotland (I will be following shortly). He is continuing to study for a degree in Env. Science online with a US university. Some of the classes require his exams to be proctored. This wasn't a problem in the US, as the local public library offered this service. However, my OH has asked the local library, as well as contacted the Uni of Glasgow and Strathclyde Uni, and none of them offer the service. The only place he's found so far that will do it, is located in London. Obviously traveling from Glasgow to London for proctoring a single exam (like a midterm) is just not feasible! (He wouldn't have the ability to take time off multiple times in a quarter to travel down there, not to mention the cost.)

Does anyone have any other suggestions of who/where else my husband could look for proctoring? If he can't find anywhere, we fear he'll have to give up his degree. We just find it ridiculous that he would have to quit studying because he can't find somewhere to do the proctoring!  :-\\\\

Where is it in London that will do it-- that might help give ideas. How about a local college / high school...maybe if you offer to pay a fee they will be motivated :) Will keep thinking!

Perhaps try the OU? There is one in Edinburgh.

I had the same situation with my intermediate algebra class that I recently finished. I'm taking online classes through Bellevue University in Omaha and needed a proctor. Fortunately, my school allows teachers to proctor and my husband knows a couple of teachers, so we used one of his friends.

If his school allows teachers to proctor (which I don't see why they wouldn't) I would suggest looking for a tutor in your area if you don't know any teachers personally. They may charge you a small fee for proctoring whether it's at their classroom or a library, but it would be easier than going to London.
There are two kinds of people.  People who say what they want, and people who DO what they want. Which one will you be?

Thanks for that Vegasgrl. Where could we find a tutor? Do they advertise in a specific place?

He contacted someone at Caledonia Uni that said they could do proctoring. The bad part is that they charge £60/exam. We've also contacted a uni professor (a forum member from another forum) that is looking into the possibility of his uni being able to do it. Hopefully either of those are going to work out. Just hard to believe how hard it's been to find something here, considering how easy it was in the US.

I can ask the person who did my proctoring if she knows any teachers in Scotland Glasgow area.  If not, I will ask her how you could find a tutor since she does tutoring as well. What price are you guys looking at? How many exams does he have?

It is hard, especially when you don't know many people in the profession. But at the same time, it was easy for my school because they didn't limit the proctoring to a library or whatnot. They just asked that I do the test in a "quiet place".

I've not heard the term 'proctoring' before so I looked it up.  I see that it's the same as invigilating.  Just thought that using an unfamiliar term might not help when trying to find a solution - though I may be wrong and academic circles may be familier with the word - in which case just ignore me!

My husband used that word when asking at the various universities, as he discovered the terminology difference. I figured I'd use the word most of the US peeps here would recognize. I've never heard of the word 'invigilating' (I can barely say it) until he looked it up.
