Halloweeny Programming??
« on: October 07, 2011, 04:55:59 PM »
I've been in a spooky mood now that it's October!  :)

There used to be so much on in the US and I remember last year being kind of meh here. I watched Most Haunted Live last year, but it was terrible without Yvette Fielding & Co. and I don't even know if they're planning to do that again. So, since Most Haunted Live is no more (may it rest in peace), I'm wondering if there is anything special coming on the telly for Halloween that may be in the same vein?

I'm looking for kind of silly stuff, but still kind of creepy, like MHL or scary movies that are scheduled or anything. Has anyone noticed anything?

I have Sky+ so I've been recording any spooky-esque movie that's been turning up on the movie channels, but there really isn't an awful lot, at least not yet.

Halp!  :)

If you have Sky, you have the Horror channel (319 & 320):
http://www.horrorchannel.co.uk/

A lot of it is crap, and they seem to love those crappy made for TV Stephen King adaptations, but you can look through the listings and set Sky+.  The broadcast quality is a bit bad though.

Some of the other free/free with pack movie channels have listings on their sites you can look through (Film4, movies4men), but they all seem to go only a week in advance.  You might find more closer to Halloween.  If I see anything specific, I will definitely post about it. :D

If you have Sky Movies there's also the Sci-fi and horror movie channel.

Also when it gets to Halloween weekend there'll be the usual films on....Halloween etc.
We tend to leave it for just the night or maybe weekend rather than having a whole month of it.

Thanks guys! Sounds like I've pretty much been doing what you've suggested, which is kind of disappointing because I'm not quite TV savvy here yet and I was hoping it was just me missing something. Apparently I'm not!  ;D

We've recorded a couple of things off of those channels and have a few more things queued up to record, but, like you said, I think I'm going to have to wait until closer to Halloween.

I'm kind of hoping BBC has something scheduled, like, oh I don't know, the history of Halloween or somesuch.  I might check the "Documentary" channels as well and see if they have any kind of Haunted History or something about Grey Ladies or something.

Desperate! Hahaha.  :)

If you're into the radio at all, Radio 4 is doing a series of scary plays this week:

Series 2 of The Walking Dead is starting on Friday.   :D

ETA: I've heard 2 of the 3 scary plays (the last 2), and they were pretty good.  The second one was written by Paul Cornell, who has written for Dr Who (and apparently was a lowly fanboy Whovian who hung out with my husband before becoming a successful television writer).  It was very Twilight Zone-y.  The one today seemed very HP Lovecraft inspired.  Both very much of a bygone Halloween era and worth catching up on if you have a spare moment

I miss the month of nearly non-stop horror and Halloween cartoons, just by flipping channels. Hooray for DVDs.  [smiley=devilish.gif]

I miss the whole month of Halloweenish things anyway. In the States I would wear my Halloween t-shirts/ necklaces / socks / Great Pumpkin boxers over leggings all of October, since you'd see at least one other person in someting from the beginning of the month, more and more as the month went on.

I also miss the OTT of the holiday. Brits don't know how to do it right. I've got a workfriend going to Universal Studios on Halloween and I'm totally green with envy. I don't think she understands what exactly she's in for!

We have been loving that show!!!

Been trying to decide whether I want to expand (and pay for) our TV package again so we can get FX Channel & be able to see the Walking Dead - I sooo want to, but DH not sure if it's worth it, just for that.  (Nope - just looked & that's probably not going to happen as we'd go from Medium to XL TV & looks like it's a lot more.  Bummer.)

When we were at my brother's house recently (near Baltimore), the neighbour across the street had this enormous yard display - several lighted blow-up things (like a pumpkin with a ghost that rises out of it, gravestones with Dracular rising up out of it, a cauldron with 3 witches rising out of it - the witch shadows in turn silhouetted against the house next door) plus lots of other figures & lights & everything.  Wow!!  :o  My brother & his wife buy huge amounts of bulk candy because they normally get as many as 300 trick-or-treaters!

I have Halloween on DVD...maybe I'll have to get some other creepy movies to add to it...

DO!! It's worth it. FX has some amazing shows on at the moment and they're getting American Horror Story in November which I totally recommend.

Can you imagine doing that here in the UK?  :D  Even on the actual day of Halloween people would be like:  :o ???
