Fears - irrational, silly or otherwise.
« on: October 20, 2011, 01:58:43 AM »
I had DF on gchat today and we were playing the question game. Mostly because my nieces were there, so he asked what their phobias were.

One of my nieces is legitimately afraid of zombies. Another is afraid of lakes. And the other said she was afraid of wide open spaces, like the ocean.

I'm terrified of heights.

We all had a giggle.

What are you all afraid of? Irrational, silly, or otherwise?

Crowds, but I guess that's related to the fact that I must have claustrophobia because I hate the feeling of not being able to move freely or get out of a place. I don't like having my physical situation depend on loads and loads of people around me. If that makes sense?  ???

Riding roller coasters!! I love the way they look, are put together, designed, but no way I'm getting on the buggers!!!

Snakes

Falling off the platform or being pushed in front of a train by a crowd

Choking

Inanimate objects that talk or blink or look evil or whatever. Like my friend's daughter had a giant my little pony that blinked and talked and moved its head. Ahhhhhh!!!!!!!  Terrifying!!!  Or when adverts have stupid things like walls or fences that talk.  I hate that!!

Falling off the platform or being pushed in front of a train by a crowd

ME TOO!

Also, I will add:

Buses (Specifically walking/driving next to them, they are big and scary. When I ride in them I feel invincible like a huge monster)

Bees/wasps/hornets
Sharks
Outer space
The deep ocean
Big crowds stuffed in tiny places (I always look for the emergency exits!)
Home invasion

ETA: Riding bicycles. I know it's silly, and my husband loves riding his bike, but i just can't get on one!

Spiders. I am arachnophobic. I will scream bloody murder if I see one... Spider eggs hatched in my bedroom, above my head when I was about 13. I looked up and there were hundreds of tiny baby spiders... The thought still makes my skin crawl.  :-\\\\  As if that's not bad enough, it happened to me again. I was in the bathroom and looked up and there they were again!

It has never happened to anyone else in my parents' house.

I also have a fear of needles, which is extremely silly because I give myself an injection every day. For the past year and a half! ;) I still freak out when I'm getting blood taken or a shot. I even hesitate before injecting myself sometimes!
Finally living with my Husband in London after 6 1/2 years together but apart... and loving my life!

The common ones:

Heights
Snakes
I am extremely claustrophobic.

Now irrational/silly ones:

I have a slight fear of knives. I usually use the dullest one I can use to do the job.

I have a terrible fear of ice/falling on ice. I nearly hyperventilated in York last year. When we got off the train, many of the sidewalks were covered in ice. I truly nearly passed out. I thought DF was going to send me back to USA that day. LOL!!

Rubber animals.  I hate them, have done since I was a small child. My fear has lessened throughout the years, but I still hate them. ;)

Get some Yak Trax! They're not perfect, but trust me, they're amazing on the ice!

Yeah, they're great. They can be hard to put on and I nearly lost one in a snow drift once. Neos overshoes are easier to use but pricey.  www.overshoe.com

My phobia -- aside from snakes and heights and enclosed spaces -- is bridges. I'm OK walking over footbridges but I'm terrified driving over bridges. Really had to steel myself going over the Piscataqua bridge and the one on the NY thruway over the Hudson. Turns out my grandfather (who was a civil engineer) had this same phobia. When they would drive down to Florida he would drive miles out of his way to avoid a bridge.  :P

I have a phobia of moths and butterflies.

I also am really unnerved by sleeping with one or both or my feet sticking out at the bottom of the bed and I can't sleep if a wardrobe or cupboard door is open.

Any insect and spiders

Extreme heights (I'm fine in a plane, but rollercoasters, when the ferris wheel stops at the top or those swing rides where it goes around and up high...ain't happening)

Anything of MASSIVELY bigger than I am (e.g. - standing on the tarmac near a 747 plane, outer space, looking at planets from space...I can't look at Google Earth when it does the place hopping it does)

Drowning/choking (done both as a child...the first in the deep end of the pool.  I slipped and couldn't swim yet.  I was unconscious when they pulled me out.  The second was on a bay leaf at dinner...had the Heimlich done to me.)

Same as kbeaumont.... Insects, spiders, bees, flies, anything that is not a human and not an animal. Even though I didn't know this but I am afraid of horses too. Lol. I found that out on my last trip back to Vegas. They're beautiful animals but so unpredictable. I think I watch too many "When Animals Attack" tv shows. Lol.

To add to that fear, just today my hubby and I got into the car from a short trip to Asda. His door was open and I guess a huge bee flew in unbeknownst to me. He quickly says "Hold On" and goes to open my door. He knows me too well. I see the bee on the window, inches from me (mind you I'm already seatbelted in.. Haha) and I FREAKED OUT! Screamed at the top of my lungs, kicked the door open.... Thank God there was no car next to us otherwise it would have gotten a huge dent. And it flew out.

I hate bees.  ::)

There are two kinds of people.  People who say what they want, and people who DO what they want. Which one will you be?

Butterflies are kinda gross huh. I guess you won't be going to the butterfly exhibit in Omaha zoo anytime soon huh? Lol. Surprisingly I went in there, the butterflies are HUGE and they land on you. There's tons in there. But I wasn't overly scared.

Bridges and clowns. I can do bridges with a lot of mental prep but clowns suck, they scare me and I am convinced that all clown dolls come to life when you are sleeping!

Get some Yak Trax! They're not perfect, but trust me, they're amazing on the ice!

I had those last year (picked up something similar at Costco last year) and were a life saver when we got pummelled with snow in early December. I could actually walk on the snowed/ice packed pavement when everyone else was in the street.

My fears:
Roller coasters
Snakes
Ledges/falling from heights
possums freak the me the heck out.
