Moved to UK in March '11 - not sure about filing
« on: January 03, 2012, 02:06:33 PM »
Hey all -

I am a USC and my husband is a UKC. We moved to the UK in March 2011. We filed our taxes in the US for the 2010 tax year, but I did work for part of 2011 in the US.

So now I am wondering what is the best way to get a copy of my W2 for my old job and how to file the 1040, if that is still the form, or perhaps find out what new form we would have to file for our US taxes.

Since we have lived here, I have not worked, but my husband does. Do I have to file an Expatriate tax return as well?

I should mention my husband has a green card in the US as well.

Thanks so much for any advice, I am so confused!

You file jointly in the US.  Free advice is available at the IRS London Embassy web pages:

Hi halliewalters,
You normally contact your previous employer and request a duplicate copy of your W-2 form. Based on the limited information you provided you'll need to file a joint return and pay tax on worldwide income. The forms you need are 1040, 1116, 2555, 2350, TDF 90–22.1 and 3903. Also, you need to consider state filing requirements both for 2011 and subsequent years. I hope this helps.
