Am I required to carry my passport?
« on: September 16, 2004, 09:02:09 PM »
I'm a UK citizen, though new to the UK.  I'm use to the idea of always carrying an official ID in my wallet, as I'm from the States.  But here, the only form of ID I have is a staff card where I work (which has a name and picture).  Am I required, or is it suggested, that I carry my UK passport with me at all times?  Thanks.
There are only 10 types of people in the world:  those who understand binary and those who don't.

My husband (UK citizen) always carries his around.  I don't, but often wish I did when asked for ID.   ::)

I use my work ID.  I've even used my old NY Sports Club Gym Membership card a few times ;D  Glad it was good for something.

I only carry my passport when I think I might need it for ID, which is hardly ever.  You might find it useful to use as ID until you get a UK drivers licence or a bank card which are usually acceptable forms of ID for most things here but I wouldn't say you need to keep it on you all the time, only if you are doing things like setting up a bank account.

I pretty much just keep mine on me at all times, mostly because I'm new to being in the UK and I'm afraid that someone's going to want ID and I won't have it on me. I still carry my US Drivers License as well, just in case (also for driving purposes's duh LoL) but if you don't feel that you're going to be needing it on you then don't worry about it...I just always feel that I've got to have mine on me.
So close no matter how far, couldn't be much more from the heart and nothing else matters...

I carry my passport because it's the only proof I have that I live here legally.

I used to carry my UK passport around until I got my credit card and switch card from the bank.
