Stress leave from work?
« on: February 03, 2012, 06:17:12 PM »
Hi, I am having some serious stress issues lately mainly due to work, but exacerbated by other life issues such as visa applications, etc.

A co worker who I know has been off previously due to stress (she originally transferred to my office from another after being off for over 6 months) has noticed what's been happening with me and has suggested I see my GP about it.

I am wondering, what exactly would seeing a GP do?  I'd like some help about my situation because I honestly think it's getting out of control, but the last thing I want is to be prescribed medication for this.  I am not depressed, I've never had any mood or mental disorders (sorry if these are the wrong terms, not trying to offend anyone here).

Ultimately I just want to leave a terrible situation in order to get my life back together and hopefully, try and find somewhere else to work.

A GP can help you without prescribing medicine.  But do you want to leave your job altogether? Because it sounds like you do.

I would like to leave my job if I was unable to get a transfer into a different office.  Long story short, the people I work with combined with the distance I have to travel (3 hours round trip) are really making it hard to live a normal life.

If I was able to have time off to get my mental health sorted and then continue working for the same company in a different office, I feel like I would be fine doing that until I ultimately found a new job, whenever that was.

I don't feel like I could return to the same office, and the only reason I haven't quit  altogether is that I just can't afford to.  It really is that bad.  If I was able to get stress leave I'd focus on finding a new job completely even if it meant taking a pay cut (and I have a feeling it will).

Your GP can have you signed off for stress, but how much your paid for that time can vary from work place to work place.
My last employer gave us a month at full pay, the next 6 at 90% and then 20% or your case would be reviewed to see if it would be best to terminate or return.

You can look for work while signed off, though.....

Thanks for all the info.

I was definitely planning on looking for work.
