There's some fantastic cheeses made in the USA as well, although unfortunately it's all (or mostly ;) ) pasteurised, but still, check out Humboldt Fog and cheeses from Doe Run Dairy, Sweet Grass Dairy or Consider Bardwell Dairy in Vermont to name a couple that I've either tried or seen come up on various food blogs lately :)

Humboldt Fog... Mmmmm... Now that is a fantastic cheese! :D

Princesslemons, try double gloucester for your grilled cheese.  It isn't like American cheese, but it does have a mild flavour and a nice texture when melted.  Of course, I like my melty cheese to be stringy, not gloopy.

I love Double Gloucester, or any kind of Cheddar.  Definitely tomato soup!

I even like Velveeta.   [smiley=curtain.gif]

There is good American cheese. The stuff they slice for you at the deli is completely different from that substance wrapped in plastic. *shudder* It's the only cheese you can use to make a grilled cheese! Anything else is the wrong texture and taste!

I'm not a huge cheese person. I do think the cheddar here is far tastier, but it is not a substitute for American cheese!

Yes, that's what DW says. It's not the same as the Kraft cheese slices (which she has used as a substitute) and she says the American cheese she could get at the deli isn't processed cheese, but she says it's the only thing that melts properly without seperating.
She does like the cheeses here though!

I saw Kraft Singles at a petrol station shop the other day. 5 slices for 99p.  Is this something new?  I dont remember seeing Kraft Singles in the UK before and always used to buy Dairy Lea slices as a substitute.

Nah, they've been around for a while, just dairylea is more popular. The closest I remember to actual american style kraft slices was Safeway value! I used to eat them when I was a scuzzy student as they were 10p for 10! :) With a loaf of 26p bread.

Zomg I was so poor in those days! :D

You all are making me hungry. One thing we are never short of in this house is cheese as we ALL love it. English hubby doesn't like American cheese (the good stuff from the deli not the plastic wrapped stuff which I never bought so he's never had) and its not my favorite. I like strong cheese...or mild. Actually, I don't think I've ever had a cheese I don't like. Especially a nice strong cheese paired up with some crusty bread and some red wine  ;D
So the difference in the provolone is one is milder than the other?? If so I have had both, and I actually prefer the flavour of the mild...but both are good.

Thanks guys--now I'm craving grilled cheese!  And I totally agree with the Double Gloucester rec--it's really the best, especially if you're not into strong cheddar.

My husband doesn't like cheese (except on pizza) or fruit.

I am amazed I married him.  ;)

FINALLY!!  For the first time in 20-odd years, I have had real, proper provolone dolce cheese in Glasgow!

HB was in Waitrose today and brought back a 'provolone cheese and speck platter' from a company called Unearthed.  It was a tray of provolone cheese layered with slices of speck ham, and drizzled with a pesto-ish basil dressing.

I didn't find this product on their website, but it was absolutely gorgeous, and I will be going back to Waitrose to get more!

Damn. Does it only come with the speck? I'm vegetarian. :(

And this thread was hilarious! I hadn't read it before! I can't believe no one mentioned the proper way to eat an American grilled cheese- with pickle slices inside!! Campbell's soup is just bonus. :)
