2 year American degree vs 1 year British degree?
« on: March 21, 2012, 07:49:54 PM »
I know most Masters programs in the UK seem to be one year long, whereas in the US they are normally 2 years.

Has anybody found that their British  MA was not taken as seriously because it was a shorter time to complete? I want to get my MA from scotland but i'm afraid if I come back to the US, employers/academics who are unfamiliar with the difference in systems might think it's not worth as much because it's only one year.

It all depends on what your programme is.  Some things are just totally different and so it won't be of much use in the US or UK.

Yeah it really depends on the subject. However, in general one thing to keep in mind is that while the UK ones are shorter, there aren't really any breaks. You get some time at Christmas and a little around Easter, but otherwise you're busy the whole normal academic year plus plugging on through the summer writing your dissertation.
