possibly silly question, but...
« on: September 23, 2004, 02:45:02 AM »
Do you have to register with the american embassy or the local authorities oranything like that when you go to stay for good? I am only asking because whenever I go to Belgrade even if only for a month, we have to register with the police that we are staying there. So if this is a silly question, sorry, but based on prior experience, I wouldnt be shocked if I did have to make my presence known!

Zivvy,

You don't have to check in with the U.S. Embassy, but you do need a visa of some sort (for example, a spouse visa) to stay here permanently, as far as UK immigration goes. Are you marrying/married to a Brit?

True, you do not have to register with the Embassy/Consulate.  I chose to register with the consulate in Edinburgh because of the communications issue.  I recieve email alerts when there is a tax accountant visiting, or when there are "open" days for US citizen to go in for Q&A or to fill out paper work (or get help with it).  On occassion I get "state safety alerts" but only twice a year or so.  Just something to think about...

You don't have to register with the Embassy, but I chose to do so.  In today's climate, I feel better knowing that somone official has a record of my contact details.
