Registering for Electoral Roll and Name Change Questions
« on: April 16, 2012, 12:23:43 AM »
Do I need to register for the electoral roll after becoming a UK citizen if I have moved outside the UK? I know it's a legal requirement once you become a citizen, but I moved a week after my ceremony.

I asked this on another thread, but haven't had any response, so I'll ask again...

When I renew my US passport, which has my maiden name, what documentation do I need for it to have my married name? Do I need to legally change my name in the US first to do this? If so, how do I do this? My UK passport has my married name.

Also, when I fly to the UK on my UK passport (married name), but return to Canada on my US passport (maiden name), what name do I book my ticket under? I've had to pay a fee to change the name on my ticket before when I accidentally used my married name and my US passport had my maiden name, and was told I could just show my marriage certificate and not pay a fee. However, someone here told me airlines are no longer allowing this.

Thanks for your help!

Regarding registering to vote as a Brit abroad:

I don't believe it is a legal requirement, though.

Regarding changing your name in your US passport:

I presume you are living in Canada with a visa? If so, which passport is the visa in? I would book the ticket in the name of that passport. You can carry both passports and show both if you are entering the UK. And your marriage certificate, or a notarised copy.

I'm sure someone more learned will jump in and ensure that I understand correctly.

Just being nosy, but where in Canada are you or are you going?  :) ;D :P

Thanks for that! My visa is in my US passport in my maiden name, as is my Canadian work permit. I just got my UK passport 3 days ago, so only had one option for the work permit. I guess I'll just make sure I have both passports and my marriage certificate when I travel. It would be so much easier if I just had my US passport in my married name, but it doesn't expire until late 2014 and I paid $80 to have pages added to it last year.

I'm in St. John's, Newfoundland. My husband is in oil and was transferred here just over a month ago for a minimum of 3 years. After that, we have no clue where we'll be headed, but sadly it likely won't be the UK. I miss Scotland, especially the grocery stores (the produce here is terrible!), but absolutely love being next to great hiking trails and the ocean. We have icebergs right now and will have whales in a month or two, so it's nice to see something so different.

Oh, St. John's always looks so sweet when I watch Republic of Doyle - reminds me of Ireland. I am considering a distance Masters at Memorial University, actually.  :)

So I may need to visit over the next few years. Hope you find the transition OK!  :)

Republic of Doyle is HUGE here. I can't say I've ever seen it, but I guess they film it here, and whenever the guys from the show are out at a bar or restaurant, everyone gets very excited. They ask me, "Don't you know who that is!??!"

It's a beautiful city and I'm really enjoying it here. Downtown is very much a mix of Canada and Ireland, with the Irish music in the pubs. Also, the Newfoundland accent sounds like an Irish accent. I miss some things about the UK, especially being in Edinburgh, but it will be fine for now. I've already gotten two interviews from CV's I've submitted in the past month, and I only had 5 or 6 interviews during my 4 years in Scotland, so things are already looking up!

Alan Hawco is in Ireland at the moment, according to Twitter.

I would love to live in that region, but there are no jobs in my or Mr MLG's field. I've only been as far east as Montreal, which makes me sad. It may be easier to visit Atlantic Canada from the UK actually.

There was a news article about a young couple who thought they got a bargain flight to Sydney, NSW, but it was for Sydney, NS!

Good news for you, job wise! Go, you!  :)
