New School-Painful Adjustments
« on: April 19, 2012, 09:32:17 AM »
Well, today is Sami's third day at high school. Her step-dad and I knew it would be hard...but its horrible. Every day its tears and its breaking my heart. She is NEVER like this. I know its going to get better with time, but right now she is stressing and its making me stress even more. She normally makes friends so easily but this time around she doesn't even seem to want to.
Anyone with any suggestions??

As I recall, ages 13-14 were the worst for me in school and it seems to be the age during which most girls have a hard time, so I would imagine being that age and moving to a new country/school will be upsetting. Give her some time and be supportive.

Well, she came home in a bit of a better frame of mind than I thought she would. AND...it was the first night without tears so far. Only thing she really complained about is the REALLY grouchy maths teacher that we already knew was grouchy. She's ancient and our 40+ year old friends know her well  ::)  I guess there's always one teacher that sticks out in your mind as the horrible one...and I think Sami just met her! LOL...well, tomorrow is Friday...the end of a VERY long week. Hopefully, next week is a bit better.

Glad things seem a little better!

I'd give her the space and availability to talk with her. Also could you make sure that there are things outside of school she can look forward to? What about helping Sami identify some interests, so she can choose local out of school activities that are fun and she enjoys?

Also some suggestions here:

Hugs also help and hugs to you as well. ((Hugs))

That's such a difficult age for any girl, let alone one who is in an entirely new environment. It'll definitely take some time.

I hope things are getting better for her.  :)

Thanks! She's in the middle of her third week and doing far better. She's made friends and is even attending a sleep over birthday party next weekend. That first week was sooo hard for her.

Hiya Kbeech, I am so glad to hear that your daughter is adjusting well to her new life there!  I will be moving to East Anglia in January of next year with my daughter who will be 12 by that time and I am concerned about how well she will adjust.  Although we have spent a lot of time over there, I am very aware that actually living and going to school there will be an entirely different thing.  Would you mind if I messaged you with questions or for advice?  This forum is a wonderful resource and I am so glad that I have found it.
