Trying to Sell Car in the States
« on: April 22, 2012, 02:54:03 PM »
Hi!

I am a MSC student studying at the University of Birmingham and moved to the UK in September, I also just married an amazing English chap, this last weekend! We recently decided that we did not want to relocate back to the United States anytime soon; however I have a 2010 Mini cooper back home that I am still making payments on, and I now need to sell it, mainly because I am tired of moving money, and because eI am not running out of money in my US accnts.

My main issues are these:

1. my dad in PA has offered to buy the car from me, however his credit union has told me that I have to be there in person to sign the title, and in turn sell the car. Needless to say I do not have the 1000$ to fly home to sell the car.

2. Mini, who has it financed currently tell me that I have to be in the country as well to sign the title, and financial paperwork.

Ok, so does anyone here know if I can sign the title here and have it notarized, or if US banks will accept a British power of attorney given to my dad?

I was pick-pocketed last week, and have found an AMAZING difference in dealing with getting the money back that was stolen, HSBC got my money back right away, however the US Account that had money taken from it require a notarized statement from me.

Does anyone know if a US credit union will accept a notarized document from the UK? My dad has asked, and no one knows at the credit union, and have told me to just mail it back overnight.

Any help with this would be great!! I'll posting in other sections about questions about visas and things now that I'm married!

Thanks in advance!!

~Theresa

You should be able to sign a power of attorney ,just for that transaction. Then your Dad can legally sign for you. I bought our house that way. I was in the states, hubby was in the Uk. I was just allowed to sign his name.

Not sure where to get one in the Uk. But you could have your/your dads US bank send you one, then you sign it and mail it back to them.

                                   Good luck!

I sold a car in the US (from the UK, through my parents). I had it paid off, so didn't need to deal with any loans, but my stepdad FedExed me the title, I signed it, and FedExed it back. Cost about £40 in postage, but that was way cheaper than flying back.

I don't think you can get a British power of attorney and have it work in the US. It shouldn't be too hard to get a US POA here, though - the only trick would be if it needs to be notarised (the US way), since there are very few places that handle that (the embassy in London springs to mind, but I'm not sure where else).
