Chicken wings :'c
« on: May 06, 2012, 07:43:05 PM »
Sooo, I just came back from a walk around Bradwell with my boyfriend and I got a hunger about me. I am starvingggg. We got some things from ASDA the other day (because he claims they have more American food.. and I guess they do considering they are owned by Walmart) but I've noticed that this time 'round in my visit I'm finding I am not liking a lot of the food here.
Which is odd considering I am not even close to a picky eater. I just hated the wings he got me from ASDA, which is unheard of for me. Is there any place in England where you can get decent chicken wings? I am craving them horribly.. :P
I feel bad because he bought a bunch of food for me and some of it I just plainly do not care for it. :c

Any time you are in a foreign country, it is best to try to find something you like there not try to replicate what you have at home.  The "American" take on foods leaves everyone disappointed so best to not go there.  At all time, you really need to remember that you aren't in the US, you are not going to find truly American equivalents.

Honestly thought, you are only in the UK for three weeks, surely you can live without chicken wings for that time?  You will be much happier trying to find what you like of British cooking.

Make your own?

That's what I tend to do, and you're in luck since you should be able to get most of the ingredients you need here.

The best Chicken wings I've had, have always been from a Chinese Resteraunt/carry out. Find a good Chinese and buy some :)

The only place I've had chicken wings here was at the pub and they were part of a meal. They weren't very good. That being said, I agree with Sara Smile. I haven't tried to find "American" foods. I love, love, love English food. So much so that the last time I lived here I gained 30+ pounds  :o Luckily I lost most of it. If I really get a craving for something "American", I make it myself.

TGI Fridays has good Buffalo Wings, but I make them at home for the best ones. Sometimes you have to forget all that you know and just try to find a substitution, sometimes a faint memory of home is better than nothing!

You can buy Franks Hot Sauce everywhere these days, make your own wings! They are super cheap!

The problem is you're buying food from Asda!*  :-X  [smiley=puke.gif]

Get thee to a butcher, get them to get the wings for you and make your own!

Of course, I do agree with the others, you're on holiday, so try and find some food you like over here, especially if you're eventually moving, etc.   There's plenty of food to suit every taste!  :)

*This is a joke, no offense to anyone who shops in Asda

Didn't all the Fridays close down a few years ago, or was it just some of them?

No, there are Fridays still around!  I've never been to one here, but they are around.  :)

I'd suggest Nandos for eating chicken wings out - a lot of people like Nandos peri-peri chicken & you get your choice of several different sauces there too.

Apart from that, making your own is a great idea but if the OP is only on holiday - she may not want to do that.  I agree with trying out British favourites while you're here rather than looking for American foods 'just like back home', because this isn't the US but rather somewhere else.  ;)

What about a nice curry?  Bangers & mash?  Toad in the hole?  A bacon butty (with brown sauce)?  Meat pies?  British cheese & biscuits?  Fish & chips?  Drooooool!

One of the best things for me about being on holiday is checking out all the local foods rather than the stuff I could easily get at home.  :)

When I first read this thread yesterday I couldn't understand what the issue was... you buy raw chicken wings, you take them home and tart them up.  There's nothing wrong with the wings... wings are , to me, a waste of time cos they don't have enough meat on them... but if you like them, it's what you do with them that makes them good or not.  It's not that the wings are bad.

But after reading everyone else's posts... it's clear that you all understood what I didn't... that Mandy was buying pre-prepared wings, and they were either not saucy or spicy enough!

I echo what others have said... make your own! But Nandos chicken is good... i just wouldn't bother with wings, personally, even at Nandos.  Gimme a nice juicy thigh any day!  :)

Never been there, but there's still one in Glasgow.

Tons of places do them to varying degrees of success.

My favourites:

Meat Liquor
Bodean's
StickyWings (http://www.stickywings.com/StickyWings.com/StickyWings.html)

I also make my own for BBQs and get-togethers using this recipe (though modified a bit) which usually ends with first borns being bartered for the last wing.
