Flight change question
« on: May 09, 2012, 05:26:15 PM »
I'm a week into my visit and I was just wondering.. if (this is a huge if, since I'd have to talk to my grandmother about it as well.. and uh, my boyfriend too, lol) I wanted to visit a week longer than my original 3 weeks, just make it an even month, pay a bit extra to change my flight tickets, how would this look to immigration later when I come back later? Am I allowed to even do this and stay a little longer than I intended to? Because I know after this visit I probably won't be coming back for a while..  :\\\'( I don't want to break the rules or anything, so I just thought I'd ask before I even opened my mouth to my boyfriend to see how he feels about it. He'd probably be all for it though, haha.
Sorry if it's a stupid question, but I was just thinking about it.

It's fine - you've been granted entry for up to 6 months and you only want to stay an extra week or two, so it's not going to be an issue with immigration. Plans change sometimes and as long as you don't try to stay for more than 6 months, you won't be breaking any immigration rules.

It could have been a problem if you'd deliberately lied to immigration and told them you were going to stay for 3 weeks when you fully intended to change your ticket and stay for longer, because that is using deception, but a genuine change in plans after you have arrived is not a problem... especially as it's only a few extra days and it's obvious you are not trying to live here illegally.

I did this in the US once - I went there for on holiday for 4 weeks, but at the last minute I changed my mind and stayed for an extra week (it wasn't long after 9/11 and there had been an issue at another airport, so I was a bit nervous about flying back at that particular time). It was not a problem at all, and since then, I have successfully applied for 4 US visa and have lived there twice.

You might want to check with your airline to see what the cost will be before you broach the subject with your Gran and boyfriend. The airline won't charge you just to change your ticket...they will also charge you any difference in price and this time of year, as we are heading into the Jubilee and tourist season; it might be astronomical. :-\\\\

When I came over here the first time to meet my now DH I was only going to stay for 2 weeks.....he and I then decided after I was here that I should stay another 2 weeks so we changed the ticket.  This was in  Nov/Dec 2009, and the airline did charge me to change the ticket.  My DH paid it on his credit card and it was about £100.00.  Not sure what it would be now......all you can do is call the airline you have your ticket through and ask them.

Dh & I recently changed our tickets as well we extended our trip a week they said since our return flight wasn't full it would only cost us an extra £100 per person. but they said if our flight was full it would have been a whole heck alot more than what we paid cause they would have to do some shuffling around thankfully our flight wasn't full. this was just last month as well. ;)  :)

Changing your flight is a crapshoot.   You might get someone at the airline who has had a bad day and decides to operate strictly by the book and you have to pay the price.  And someone else might take pity on you and bend the rules. But as high season approaches, and there are less and less seats, the nice agents might not have as many opportunities to be nice. Good luck!

I agree with Karrit above. When I worked for an airline (this is a few years ago mind you) I had the ability to change things with or without charging the fees. It all depended on my day, how willing I was to bend the rules (I could get into trouble) and how the customer treated ME. If someone came at me with a total attitude, they got the highest fare I could book them ;D, but if someone was genuinely nice I would go pretty far to help them out.
It also depends on how your ticket was booked. Did you book directly with the airline? Or through a website like expedia? Sometimes that makes a difference too.
Doesn't hurt to check though!!!

When I changed mine in 2010, it was for a 'smallish' feel of about $75, but the woman first told me it depended on if the ticket was non-transferable or not. She said if it was non-transferable it couldn't be changed for any price. Fortunately, it wasn't. We'd booked it through Just the Flight, but I called the airline directly about changing it. I figured it might be less hassle to call directly than to mess with the middle man.

Thanks everyone for the replies, I really appreciate it!! The issue might be a little tricky seeing as I have two flights to change. I did book directly with my second flight with the first I did it via Hotwire  :-\\\\ One is with British Airways (leaving the country) and the other is with US airways going back to my home in NY from the Boston airport. I brought this up to my boyfriend after ksand24's prompt and informative reply :D and he said he couldn't because he had to work. Which I said, ok fair enough. But he just came in the room just now and asked if I could change my flight for a week later. Issue is I've never changed my flight before, I've been searching on google on how because I'm such a newb.

If it isn't insanely highly price to change, it won't matter how much it is to change it, because after this trip I won't be seeing him until next year. :( $100-$200 area would be ideal, Maybe more will be fine seeing as I have enough in my savings. But I can't seem to find anything even on the British Airways website suggesting you can even change it. Which is a bit worrying.. Maybe I'm just over-looking it though

In my opinion in situations like this-- get off the website and pick up the phone, talk to a person and ask them to help.

Hon, you're going to have to call the airlines to ask about changing your tickets.  They are the only people who will know what type of ticket you've got, if it's even possible to change and if so, what flight availability (and associated costs) look like.

Try here for telephone numbes for BA:  http://www.britishairways.com/travel/ctclist/public/en_gb/About_Country=GB

You're not going to be able to change the flight with Hotwire. Those flights are completely non-refundable and non-changeable.

I hope that the BA flight is the one that you booked directly because presumably, that's the more expensive one. Do you have some sort of confirmation number? Use it to view your itinerary on the website. There should be some link to "fare rules" or something and the information should be there. If you can't decipher it, copy and paste it here and I'll help.

So I did a dummy booking on ba.com and looked up the change fees. They're $275 for that booking. Now, I don't know that your flight is in the same fare class so it might be different but it's likely the same. :( And that's likely PLUS any fare difference.

Apologies, this is truly one of those cases of text reading differently then intended. I really did simply mean it as advice that it will be easier to speak to someone than try the headaches of figuring it out online- when I re-read I realise it came across brusque and as if I was having a go about you doing it online- truly was not my intention.
