US - UK Child Support?
« on: June 06, 2012, 03:42:55 AM »
Hello.  I have a question.

I currently live in the U.S. and receive child support from my ex through the county direct deposit into my bank account.
(They take it from his pay check once a month and put it into my checking account.)
I am planning to move to the UK in August with my 2 children and my British husband.  (Yes I have gotten permission from the court.)

Obviously, I will have to give the court my new UK bank account # when I move over there.

Does anyone have any experience with this?
How the support gets converted each month from $ to £ and such.  Is it automatic, is there a fee...?

Thanks!

Sounds like something you'd need to discuss with the bank. The child support office should just deposit the support in whatever bank account you provide to them.  It's the bank that would deal with the changing of the currency. Good luck! :)
We stole countries with the cunning use of flags. Just sail around the world and stick a flag in. "I claim India for Britain!" They're going "You can't claim us, we live here! Five hundred million of us!" "Do you have a flag …? "What? We don't need a flag, this is our home, you bastards" "No flag, No Country, You can't have one! Those are the rules... that I just made up!...and I'm backing it up with this gun, that was lent to me from the National Rifle Association."

I wouldnt be surprised if they only deposited into a US bank account.  I haven't had any experience with child support payments, but when I very first moved to the UK, I wanted to paycheck deposited into my US account for a few months and my employer said it wasnt possible b/c there were extra fees charged to them to do this.  We also have an employee in Germany and won't pay her into her German account for this same reason.

When my husband and I living in the states, he had a few years of child support left to pay on his child here in the UK. The state garnished his wages. (at our request because when we'd wire the money, his ex denied receiving it and it turned into a big convoluted mess) The state was able to direct deposit the money into the ex's UK bank account. She was at the mercy of the current exchange rates though. I would imagine she had to pay a fee every time a foreign deposit was made. (as when we moved our money over to the UK we were hit with a small fee by our bank for the transfer)

So yes, it is possible to collect your child support while abroad. I'd check with you state child support agency about how you go about getting it set up.
Let them eat cupcakes!

Officially Britishly since August 2013

Update:  They *do* only direct-deposit into U.S. banks, but will either send a check to England for us, deposit onto a Visa/MC debit or into my existing U.S. account and then wire transfer (for a fee) every month.

We are looking into the logistics of the costs behind deposting the check each month into our UK account (converting dollars to pounds and associated fees) or the wire transfer vs. PayPal.

Thanks for your advice.

Why not just have it deposited in the US and draw it out with a bank card in the UK?
