Florida to Lincs
« on: September 28, 2004, 04:47:07 PM »
Hello,
I'm from the Florida panhandle area (Ft Walton Beach/Destin). I married my British husband in May in beautiful Bermuda. Martin is originally from South Bucks but is working for the next few years in Lincolnshire. We have just bought a home in the small village of Fulstow, near Louth.
I am working part time for an American airlines and go back to the states almost every month for work, so I don't feel like a total expat yet.
We still have our dogs in the US (I raise & show smooth collies) and when we get totally moved in, we will deal with getting them over.
I've just received my FLR(M) visa which was a lot easier process than I thought it would be.
This board looks like a wealth of information!

I "cheated" and used one of those Visa services that are listed on the NY web site. I needed my passport for work and figured it would cost me more to go to NY, take a cab, pay for a dogsitter, etc than using the service. It was only 60$ and I had it back in 2 days. Of course then we were hit by hurricane Ivan and I ended up cancelling my work trip, but there you go.....

Well, both of us are from more urban areas, so this is a change! I believe Fulstow has a population of 550! But so far, everyone we've met seem pretty friendly--often to me more than my husband. I think people are just curious as to how an American ended up in their village :)
It's also been nice to start driving in a more rural area, too. I feel like I'm starting off at a pace I can handle.
Thanks for the welcome,
Bethany

I like the east coast although it can get a bit blustery in winter. We go there most years, but further down from you to Lowestoft as we have relatives there.

Hiya, I work just up the road in Gainsborough and have relatives on the Wolds.  Welcome to the neighbourhood  :)  You'll have to tell me how you get on in Lincolnshire.  I've found it to be a "unique" experience.

On my first visit, we went to the see the coast near North Somercotes--it was so cold and windy that I wouldn't even get out the car! I have had to invest in some real winter clothes now :P

Oh you're not far at all!
Lincolnshire is a bit different--I lived in Berkshire as a teenager for several years and then with my husband being from the south, that is really what I am most familiar with--I'll keep you posted on the transition!
