Infer v. imply
« on: July 14, 2012, 11:31:13 AM »
Does anyone have a 'rule of thumbs' kind of explanation for these two words? I have always used them interchangeably but have found they aren't quite the same.

They are not the same at all, and they are often confused...

http://grammartips.homestead.com/imply.html

Both are verbs...

The verb 'to infer' means to deduce, and the verb 'to imply' means to state indirectly.

You imply to, you infer from.

Example: "I infer from the fact that you're carrying an umbrella that you think it's going to rain."  "Joe's mother implied (to him) that if he didn't clean his room he'd get no dinner."

Thanks for the guidance. I had inferred from your previous posts that you both knew you stuff....

They made an imply/infer joke in the very short-lived Dresden Files tv show. They got letters from happy English teachers.

"Just what are you inferring?"
"No, I implied. You inferred."

Maybe you had to be there.
