US gift vouchers paid for by UK card

It's my sister's birthday next week, and I've left it too late to go shopping, buy something she'll like, and post it in time to arrive for the 25th. 

So I was thinking:  Amazon.com voucher, but the US Amazon site doesn't accept payment by UK credit/debit card. 

Do you guys know of any US websites, shops, etc where I can order a present or gift card online, to be delivered to a US postal address or email address, and pay for it using a UK credit/debit card?

Strange....I've bought loads of stuff from Amazon.com using a UK credit card, both to be sent to UK or sent on to someone in the US. I even bought a kindle last year and had it shipped to where we were staying. Might be specific to buying gift cards as that could be seen as trying to transfer money and subject to money laundering regulations.

I tried buying the gift card with a debit card... Maestro.  Maybe that was the problem and I should try it with a Visa or Mastercard? 

It is unlikely to take Maestro because that doesn't exist in the US, but you might be able to use a Visa debit, and you should definitely be able to use a credit card.

Thanks guys... that didn't occur to me at the time, although it totally makes sense.   [smiley=dunce.gif]I will try it again with a Visa card.

Guys, thanks for letting me know about Amazon.  I tried it this morning with a Visa card, and it was fine, so the issue must have been with the Maestro card.  This will make all future birthdays and Christmasses so much easier!

(although, my ultra-picky family are a bit sniffy about gift cards... they kind of feel it's what you get someone you can't really be bothered about, but surely they can understand the predicament of being abroad, and if they can't... tough.)

I had been looking at other options... in Texas they have this fast food place called Sonic, which my family really like, and I was on their website trying to sort out gift cards.  It looked like it might work, but then, although it allowed me to enter UK as the country of my billing address, it wouldn't let me bypass the 'state' field, and kept rejecting because of that.  Then I tried to email their customer service, and it was this huge long convoluted series of questions about which store I was at, what time of day, was there a manager present, etc... so I gave up.

Starbucks was also a thought, but I hadn't got as far as trying to navigate their website.  Might think about that one for my niece's Christmas... she is almost 16 and seems to think coffee the height of sophistication!

Would love to hear other tried and tested ideas, if anyone has any...

UK Starbucks cards work fine in the US and visa versa so in a pinch, you could even buy a card at a Starbucks in the UK and mail it. You'll end up with an odd amount of dollars on the card because of the exchange rate but if you could find a uniquely UK card, it could be cool. I could see a 16 year old feeling really special, having an exotic Starbucks card.

I have definitely, absolutely, 100% done it, both ways. I've used my US Sbux card in the UK (where the baristas actually thought that my dime-a-dozen in the US "gold card" was cool) and used a UK card in the US as well. It's a good way to get rid of an odd leftover £7 or something at the end of a trip since you can use it in dollars in the US.

I'm glad someone has done this and it worked. I was going to suggest it too as I thought this was the case, but since I never tried it I didn't want to give out bad information.

You can pay with a UK credit card. My friends in the UK send me Amazon.com gift cards all the time.
